LatinoJustice PRLDEF, Inc (LJP) is seeking to hire a Senior Director of Strategic Communications  to lead the development and execution of a strategic, integrated communications plans in support of LatinoJustice PRLDEF’s pillars and programs. The ideal candidate has a deep understanding and commitment to equity communications, has led comprehensive communications campaigns for a social justice organization, provided strategic communications guidance to the President & General Counsel and other executive leadership, and brings experience in developing strategies that elevate the work of the organization, including leadership, staff and key stakeholders. The Director will focus on the active promotion of our organizational impact through traditional and digital media vehicles; proactively manage standard and crises communications; and work with our program, advocacy, development and administrative teams to strategically plot, implement and assess how our organizational communications effectively build engagement across our stakeholder constituencies. 

COMPETENCIES AND JOB DUTIES

The position, reporting to the Chief of External Strategy & Affairs, supports the mission of LJP, and is able to effectively tell our story to a diverse audience. Specifically, the Director will:

  • Lead the communications department, collaborating with legal, advocacy and development directors to plan, manage and set the strategic direction of the organization’s communications program in support of the overall organizational objectives to highlight the success of LJP; elevate the profiles of its leadership, staff, board members and volunteers; draw in potential clients and allies; and cultivate support from constituents. 
  • Devise and implement the strategy, messaging, and tools needed to build the image and increase the visibility of the organization: guiding production of content to help support operational needs, as appropriate; and deepening communications programs, leveraging external and internal traditional and digital media platforms:
    1. Manage press releases, press conferences and press coverage for organizational events, announcements and accomplishments;
    2. Pitch our work and talent to broadcast media and manage public statements, speaking engagements and crisis communications;
    3. Oversee and manage development of organizational materials, newsletters, films and appearances that feature and/or spotlight our work, staff and Board leaders, clients and accomplishments, including production and release of our Annual Report;
    4. Work with program, advocacy and development staff to and showcase LatinoJustice’s impact and appeal to potential potential donors, volunteers, partners, clients, board members and staff.
  • Maintain our organizational brand, ensuring adherence to brand guidelines in all of our public-facing materials and presentations, fostering a cohesive organizational look, feel and tone across individual initiatives and campaigns, including ensuring consistency of design standards, quality and tone, particularly through outside vendors.
  • Provide communications counsel and support to administrative and program leaders to support the organization’s mission and goals. Provide consultative communications support to leaders who are communicating to key target audiences, including the Office of the President, Development, CAP Leadership Institute, Legal & Advocacy, People Ops, and others.
  • Use data-driven approach to inform ongoing strategy and maximize impact of communications initiatives; provide ongoing reporting of metrics tied to initiatives.
  • Continually review and update communications policies, procedures and best practices; stay current with communications trends and technology advances.
  • Supervise direct reports, freelance resources and volunteers for key external communications projects, e.g. 50th Anniversary, website, etc., working in close partnership with other members of the organization. 
  • Performs related duties, as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's Degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations or related field, required. Minimum 7 years of experience in Communications, Public Relations, or Content Marketing, required; content creation and production experience, preferred.
  • Bilingual ENG/SPA with exceptional writing samples in both languages, required; top-notch creativity, writing & verbal communication skills are essential.
  • Strong writer and creative storyteller; extensive experience managing integrated communications initiatives in a collaborative, project-driven environment.
  • Relationship management critical: builds and maintains trust and a cohesive relationship with all key stakeholders; ability to bring strategic approach to delivering high-impact, multi-channel campaigns.
  • Good analytical skills and experience with budget management; deep understanding of our mission, values and purpose.
  • Proven ability to comfortably and decisively manage multiple priorities and projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience working across digital media: internet, intranet, video, social media, mobile, etc., direct mail and print media. 
  • Knowledge of Adobe Professional, Photoshop, Office 365 and PC applications required.
  • Experience in supervising professional teams; mentoring and advising; assigning and evaluating work; and reviewing performance.
