VICE PRESIDENT OF UNIVERSITY ADVANCEMENT

CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY, EAST BAY

Hayward, California

A national leader in educating a diverse student body and a catalyst for the social mobility of its graduates, California State University, East Bay (Cal State East Bay) is embarking on an exciting trajectory of growth and transformation under the leadership of President Cathy Sandeen. As the university moves into a comprehensive strategic planning process, likely to be supported by a future campaign, Cal State East Bay seeks a mission-driven, innovative, and experienced vice president of university advancement to enhance the visibility and fundraising capabilities of the university and build a best-in-class advancement operation. Joining President Sandeen early in her tenure, and partnering with an evolving university leadership team, the vice president will play a key role in strategizing and developing future fundraising and engagement initiatives that will enable the university to continue its unparalleled student support network, cultivation of a diverse and inclusive campus for all members, advocacy for sustainability, and significant contributions to the regional economy and workforce through the education and preparation of future leaders.

Reporting to President Sandeen, the vice president is responsible for designing and executing a comprehensive, integrated advancement strategy and the necessary systems to build a high-performing operation that will drive new private support and industry partnerships, especially with Silicon Valley entrepreneurs; maintain and elevate current donors; and bring fresh ideas that respond to the evolving nature of philanthropy. This will necessitate an expansion of the donor pipeline, particularly beyond the alumni base, to identify potential mission-aligned individual and institutional donors; a strategic approach to driving an increase in corporate and foundation support; and an understanding of the different ways that Cal State East Bay’s diverse constituents want to engage with the university, as well as an ability to articulate and broadcast what uniquely differentiates Cal State East Bay in new and compelling ways. The vice president will also be charged with bringing innovative strategies to meet the needs of the unique and diverse student body and alumni of Cal State East Bay.  By assessing existing fundraising practices and seeking input from key internal and external stakeholders, the vice president will ensure a holistic approach to cultivating and strengthening a culture of philanthropy across all members of the community.

In accordance with its core values and mission, Cal State East Bay is especially committed to recruiting individuals from historically marginalized or underrepresented backgrounds and identities, who possess a demonstrated commitment to fostering equity, diversity, and inclusion in their leadership, and a track record of raising funds to support mission-critical goals that advance access, diversity, and inclusion. The successful candidate must also possess the authenticity and cultural competency necessary to be an effective representative of the university, and the desire and ability to build bridges and collaborative relationships across the Cal State East Bay community as a key liaison to its diverse internal and external constituencies.
