The ASU Foundation, one of five nonprofit entities that make up ASU Enterprise Partners, is seeking an Director of Development, MLFTC. With nearly 7,000 students, Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College (MLFTC) is the largest education preparation school in the country. MLFTC is one of a handful of colleges of education that excels at both educator preparation and world-class research and plays a catalytic role in driving systemic change that is better for educators, learners, and communities.                                            

The director of development for the college is a senior development professional who works collaboratively with the ASU Foundation for A New American University (ASUF) and Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College to lead the college’s overall development program and secure significant philanthropic investments.  The principal activity of development directors is externally focused and so the director’s effectiveness will be evaluated on the ability to achieve financial goals and contact metrics. The director reports to the ASUF assistant vice president development, has a liaison reporting line to the dean, and serves as a member of the Foundation’s Unit Leadership Team and the college’s executive leadership team.

 

What you’ll do:

  • Create and implement a comprehensive development program in the college, working with existing colleagues and managing staff as appropriate
  • Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift donors, using moves management concepts and tools
    • Manage a portfolio of 100-150 major gift ($25,000+) donors and prospective donors
    • Prepare or assist in the preparation of solicitation materials as needed for individual, corporate and/or foundation prospects
  • Participate in strategic planning for academic programs as it relates to fundraising, working closely with the dean and faculty leaders to identify fundraising needs and opportunities
  • Plan and implement strategies and programs for achieving established fundraising objectives in accordance with all established priorities and policies
  • Provide the dean and others with appropriate donor information and create appropriate materials for donor visits
  • Work effectively in the Foundation’s prospect management and tracking system, following all protocols for visits and solicitations 
  • Guided by the direction and scope of each prospect’s interest, pro-actively collaborate across the university enterprise and with constituent and central development officers and colleagues to leverage the maximum philanthropic potential of each donor
  • Work closely with ASUF colleagues to ensure that the college’s fundraising priorities and opportunities are integrated with broader initiatives and to obtain specialized expertise or access
  • Guide the development of written proposals, white papers, strategic plans, budgets, and the other related collateral materials needed to deepen prospect engagement for securing a gift
  • Provide oversight to the college’s overall grant activity
  • Furnish timely reports on progress toward assigned goals and solicitation results
  • Work in a results-oriented, dynamic environment with complex and evolving relationships and priorities 
  • Other development related duties as assigned by the dean and the assistant vice president of constituent development

What you’ll need:

  • Collaborative style, combined with the ability and desire to work in a team-based environment 
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality and responsibility regarding information related to Foundation and University business and confidential prospect information
  • Strong and collegial interpersonal skills and an ability to communicate effectively in person, in writing, and by phone
  • Knowledge of principles and techniques of development/fundraising, preferably in higher education
  • Able to secure personal appointments and qualify new prospects 
  • Demonstrated achievement in securing philanthropic investments
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Problem solver who can take initiative and set priorities while being flexible 
  • Team-oriented strategist able to effectively manage complex situations involving numerous and sometimes competing constituencies
  • Ability to represent the institution well
  • An advocate’s belief in the vision of ASU as the New American University
  • Ability to prepare complex and detailed proposals and related materials
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties
  • Highly organized and able to handle multiple projects
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and comfortable working in donor/prospect computer data base systems
  • Documented success in personally implementing sophisticated, multi-year cultivation strategies that use a relationship-building and moves management approach leading to successful gift closure
  • Adept at navigating complex environments with evolving priorities and communication plans 
  • Demonstrable experience in stewardship plans leading to additional investments 
 

Relevant qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and five to seven years successful professional development and/or fundraising related experience, preferably in higher education: OR, any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skill and abilities have been achieved.

 

Mental demands:

Clarity of focus while juggling complex projects or deadlines.

 

Working Conditions:

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work. Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing, and pulling up to 25 pounds. Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts. May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses. Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions. This position may require some early mornings and evenings to accommodate meetings and events. This position currently requires you to work from the office.

 

Working Equipment:

This position will require a Surface/laptop computer, desk telephone, a mobile communication device ($30 bi-weekly payroll reimbursement), corporate credit card and business cards.
