About GiveDirectly
GiveDirectly (GD) aims to reshape international giving – and millions of lives – by providing cash grants directly to the world’s poorest. The Brookings Institution estimates that $70B of cash transfers would be required to eliminate the poverty gap; the aid sector currently spends $135B each year, much of it on evidence-free interventions. GiveDirectly wants to change that, establishing cash transfers as a benchmark for foreign aid – as the index fund is a benchmark for the financial industry – and in the process accelerating the end of extreme poverty.
GD has raised over $700M since launching in 2011, delivered cash to more than 1 million people, and launched offices in 10 countries. We’ve also supported large-scale, experimental research that indicates strong recipient impact of our programs. As a result, GD has been celebrated as one of the most innovative non-profit companies by Fast Company, while the growing cash transfer movement (and GD’s leading role within it) have been featured in the New York Times Magazine, This American Life, Foreign Affairs, and The Economist.
We’re looking for exceptional talent to grow our collaborative, diverse team. Joining GiveDirectly provides the opportunity to work alongside individuals who come from 21 different countries and speak 69 different languages. We’re actively working toward an equitable and inclusive environment for all team members, and seek candidates who will bring diverse perspectives and experiences to our organization. We recruit from organizations across all industries: our team has hailed from sectors including start-ups, government, consultancies, investment banks, and nonprofits.
Across our global offices, our culture is candid, analytical, non-hierarchical, and fast-paced. We value ability, adaptability, and willingness to learn. We offer competitive salary and benefits, as well as performance-based bonuses.
About this role
We believe ending extreme poverty in our lifetimes is possible, and that cash can play a key role in getting us there. We’ve in the midst of launching a number of exciting projects that will bring us to another level of impact, and need a Senior Manager to lead the charge, managing these projects in the first phases of their lifecycle: from idea to launch.
You’ll work with some of GiveDirectly’s largest donors to figure out how to best leverage their dollars, achieve key outcomes, and launch catalytic projects that change how we think about what’s possible with cash. You’ll also manage projects closely across key stakeholders within GiveDirectly: our research team, country directors and their ops teams; the Innovation team; and our founders.
In this role you’ll not only help ideas take shape as ambitious yet realistic projects that maximize impact, but also coordinate across donors and projects to build a coherent and compelling vision for how these projects can eventually ladder into each other, and into a broader theory of change.
This role will lead the charge on GiveDirectly’s newest and largest projects that will help us reach our next 1M recipients (and more!). Finally, you’ll be driven by a deep dedication to shifting the status quo in the philanthropy space by putting aid budgets directly in the hands of recipients.
Reports to: Senior Manager, Growth
Responsibilities:
-
Work closely with our leadership and
major donors to align ideas with operational realities, and as
projects take shape, keep donors up to date with updates, our
latest decision-making, and content from the field
Project manage internal stakeholders
as projects get off the ground. Work with stakeholders to identify
and communicate our theory of change; create robust timelines and
budgets; identify key risks (e.g., a telco not sharing necessary
data, or GiveDirectly not receiving approval to run a randomized
control trial) and ensure teams are thinking through mitigants; and
define what success looks like
On major-donor ops projects, own our
theory of change, and get in the weeds on how cash might lead to
positive impacts not just with the individual, but with
governments, the private sector, and broad access to services
Through all projects, build scalable,
high-quality processes; rigorously analyze what works & doesn’t
work; and reprioritize where necessary
Define what and how we communicate
about these projects to our donors, the press, and the public
Leverage digital products built by
our Product Team to communicate impact (and work cross-functionally
teams to enable these products, e.g., by ensuring field teams are
trained to collect recipient stories)
We’re looking for candidates with:
-
5+ years of professional
experience in a fast-paced environment managing highly-complex
projects with internal and external stakeholders, building
high-value relationships, and attacking ambitious problems in
uncharted territory
Ability to lead decision-making on
complex financial, operational, research, and comms
questions
Inspiring, clear, and succinct
communications style. Our donors are time-poor and get straight to
the point (but are also funny, creative, and thoughtful). You’ll
need to both nail comms with them, ensuring they stay engaged with
interesting content / updates
Ability to create both compelling,
clean decks and complex models. You’ll frequently dive into the
data, and then surface what matters onto a deck with clear
headlines that get the point across unambiguously
Passion for putting
structure and process to ambiguous problems
- Exceptional alignment with GiveDirectly Values and an active demonstration of our core competencies: emotional intelligence, problem solving, project management, follow-through, and fostering inclusivity. We welcome and strongly encourage applications from candidates who have personal or professional experience in the low-income and/or historically marginalized communities that we serve.
-
Bonus but not required:
Experience working on cash research; familiarity with the effective
altruism community; experience with SQL
