Role Overview:

The Voting Rights Lab is seeking a Senior Director of Major Gifts in partnership with the Executive Director to develop and manage the strategic fundraising plan to grow our major gifts fundraising over the next year so that we can continue to expand our work  to secure, protect and defend voting rights for all Americans, especially voters of color. 

 

This role will be responsible for supporting all major gifts of $50,000 and greater, and will personally manage a portfolio of donors giving 250,000 and up. The Senior Director of Major Gifts will oversee the Development Manager and report directly to the Vice-President of Operations & Chief of Staff.

Regular travel required in this position.

Responsibilities include, but not limited to:

Donor Cultivation (40%)

  • Managing all aspects of the major donor fundraising program (gifts ranging from $50,000 to $1,000,000+) including developing and managing the budget and planning process, personal solicitations by the Executive Director and other leadership staff and board members, major donor appeals, prospect research and tracking, solicitation materials and reports, and donor stewardship and cultivation 
  • Personally manage and solicit a portfolio donors and prospects with a focus on individuals with the capacity to give six-and seven-figure gifts
  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to plan and manage their fundraising efforts, including oversight of scheduling, coordinating donor meetings, and facilitating follow-up

Material Preparation ( 30%)

  • Create written materials and other collaterals in support of fundraising initiatives, including proposals, solicitations, reports, appeal letters, presentations and more 

Management and Strategy (30%) 

  • Work with the Development Team to build out a clearly-defined major gifts-giving pipeline. Use strategies that encourage retention and upgrades to hit and exceed annual goals 
  • Establish standard practices for identification, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgement, and stewardship of major donors
  • Manage Development Manager and other staff to hit their goals and ground them in VRL’s values and theory of change

Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant fundraising experience with a proven track record of hitting fundraising goals, increasing responsibility, and managing a team towards success
  • Exceptional writing skills
  • Significant development experience with emphasis on donor cultivation, prospect research dn major gifts solicitation, including demonstrated success in direct solicitation of 5-7 figure gifts
  • Proven communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Strong analytical and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability to expand major gifts program including materials, tracking, stewardship, solicitation and closing
  • Experienced and adept staff manager and project manager who is organized, resourceful, and flexible.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and committed to acting on the belief that racial equity and social justice are critical components of our work.

 

Salary and benefits:

The Senior Director of Major Gifts is in the "Seniot Director 2" pay band, and the annual compensation for that band is $150,000 - $175,000.  Pay will vary within this range to account for relevant experience and the cost of living in your part of the country.
