Reporting to the Head of Philanthropic Advisory, the Philanthropy Advisor is responsible for providing high-quality advice and solutions to clients. This involves working directly with clients, client advisors, and other service teams across our core areas of expertise: philanthropic planning, grantmaking, governance and family engagement. Depending on where clients are in their philanthropic journeys, the Philanthropic Advisory team may serve as thought partners, facilitators, navigators, ambassadors, and connectors to help clients advance their goals and objectives. The Philanthropy Advisor will serve as the Florida Region practice lead with a preference for the candidate being based in Miami. 

Position Responsibilities:

  •  Consult on complex client engagements that involve:
    • Evaluating and selecting charitable vehicles
    • Conducting issue-area research, landscape analyses, and due diligence on organizations
    • Providing discrete technical advice on foundation governance, tax issues, gift agreements, and self-dealing concerns
    • Designing and facilitating family foundation meetings and board retreats to define mission, funding priorities, and grantmaking approach 
    • Coaching private foundation boards in planning for and navigating eventual leadership transitions 
    • Serving as client’s representative in communicating with grantees, and structuring and reviewing major gifts
    • Advising on opportunities for nonprofit board service and volunteering
  • Educate clients and colleagues on the Bessemer Giving Fund, the firm’s $750 million donor advised fund program
  • Collaborate with new business team in identifying and cultivating prospective family, private foundation and endowment clients
  • Develop internal resources, tools, and training modules for colleagues on timely philanthropic topics, trends and frequently asked questions 
  • Support the development of thought leadership and marketing materials
  • Plan and host clients at internal and external philanthropy conferences and events
  • Represent Bessemer at speaking engagements, industry events and other external activities
  • Contribute to team strategy development and ongoing data collection that informs team’s impact on client service and colleague support 
  • Compliance with and sensitivity to confidentiality across all aspects of working in a multi-family office setting

Position Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree required and master’s degree in relevant field (business, nonprofit management, social entrepreneurship) preferred
  • 7-10 year of related experience in philanthropic advising, wealth management, or grantmaking or equivalent combination of education and experience required. 
  • Willingness to travel for business 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Comfortable handling multiple priorities and projects 
  • Entrepreneurial; comfortable working on a small team
  • Excellent facilitation and presentation skills 
  • Demonstrates alignment with Bessemer’s core values and commitment to diversity and inclusion
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite - Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Word
  • Proficiency in Salesforce or similar CRM system a plus
