Organizational Unit Overview               

The Division of University Advancement is the friend-raising and fund-raising arm of the general academic areas of the university; therefore, all of its activities are designed to generate support, financial or otherwise, for East Carolina University. The units and subunits within the division work together to identify, involve, cultivate, and solicit alumni and friends of the university to gain financial support from the private sector for the purpose of enhancing the long- and short-range growth and welfare of the university. The Office of the Vice Chancellor for University Advancement is responsible for the following diverse units: Alumni Relations, ECU Foundation, ECU Medical and Health Sciences Foundation, and the office of University Advancement.

Job Duties              

Purpose of Position:

As an officer in the Division of University Advancement at East Carolina University, the Director of Donor Relations is responsible for the planning, preparation, implementation, coordination, oversight, and accountability of a major ongoing comprehensive program for stewarding donors, involving the East Carolina University Foundation and the ECU Medical and Health Sciences Foundation.

Responsibilities of the Position:

In order to fulfill the purpose of the position, the Director of Donor Relations will utilize multiple and varied approaches to plan, prepare, coordinate, implement, and oversee the donor stewardship and donor relations programs to all constituents of East Carolina University. Included in this responsibility are certain expectations:  (These expectations include, but are not limited to.)

  • Steward all major donors and prospects for their contributions to all academic programs at East Carolina University
  • Develop and maintain tracking systems to ensure that major gift officers and ECU administrators steward assigned donors/prospects on a regular basis
  • Manage gift acknowledgement system to ensure donors receive appropriate documentation verifying gifts and expressing appreciation for their support of East Carolina University
  • Work and coordinate with other members of the advancement staff to accomplish the goals and objectives of University Advancement.
  • Develop and implement consistent policies and procedures for donor stewardship among the two Foundations
  • Develop new ways to show gratitude and appreciation to donors
  • Develop new ways to show donors how their gifts make a difference
  • Maintain accurate records of membership in all giving societies
  • Plan and coordinate special events recognizing donors to various giving clubs and giving societies

Reporting Relationship

  • The Director of Donor Relations reports to the Strategic Initiative Campaign Manager of University Advancement

Minimum Education/Experience          

The Director of Donor Relations is a member of the University Advancement team and must strong administrative and interpersonal skills. They should also have knowledge of the principles and techniques of fund raising and donor relations as applied to higher education or other relevant philanthropic entities.

The Director should possess: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of appropriate directly related experience
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to interact positively with a wide range of individuals
  • Ability to identify and resolve problems
  • Ability to plan and organize
  • Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in applying and interpreting policies
  • Creativity, flexibility, and the capability to work with limited supervision
  • Energy, integrity, sincerity and the desire to succeed
