The Position

The National Women’s Law Center (NWLC) seeks an External Affairs Associate to work closely with the Director of External Affairs on the Development team to support the Center’s corporate fundraising and communications program for engaging leading businesses, law firms, and influencers, in order to raise critical resources for the organization and awareness of our work. In addition, this position will also support grasstops engagement and pro bono initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Supporting both the Director and Manager of External Affairs in their management of NWLC’s Leadership Advisory Committee, a key group of ambassadors for the organization, by assisting in the planning and execution of meetings, events, calls and communications.
  • Supporting the corporate and law firm solicitors within the Development Team as a key liaison to the Senior Manager of Events for execution of fundraising events—assisting with sponsorship solicitation and internal solicitation processes and activation, as well as providing cultivation, reporting and event assistance as appropriate.
  • Supporting solicitors (including members of the NWLC Senior leadership team) with their portfolios by tracking actions in Raiser’s Edge; supporting cultivation/stewardship by preparing emails, backgrounders, and call sheets as appropriate; and recording outcomes and next steps in RE.
  • Managing a small portfolio of companies, law firms and organizations giving at the $1,000-$10,000 level.
  • Researching and maintaining a pipeline of law firm and corporate donor prospects and assisting in cultivation and stewardship of existing donors.
  • Tracking donor relationships and supporter engagement activities and working inter-departmentally to facilitate information sharing.
  • Recording and supporting project coordination for pro bono partnerships and grasstops engagement.
  • Monitoring the impact of NWLC’s work to support development of prospect communications that reflect a compelling case for engagement with leaders in the business and legal communities.
  • Working with the Development Assistant in the creation of acknowledgment letters for corporate and law firm donors and ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Experience in fundraising/development, communications, or other related fields;
  • Strong research, and organizational skills, with strong eye for detail, and a thoughtful, creative, and analytical approach to managing complex tasks;
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed, provide solutions and work well with competing priorities, meet deadlines, and achieve results, manage projects effectively, and manage workflow processes involving multiple people;
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in a fast-paced, diverse, and inclusive team setting, remaining flexible, resourceful, and proactive;
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills and comfort with engaging in communications with prominent law firm and corporate leaders;
  • Sound judgment and ability to exercise discretion when dealing with confidential information regarding the Law Center’s business and sensitive donor information;
  • Proficiency in MS Word, MS Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Demonstrated commitment to and experience working on gender and racial equity and centering communities of color in their approach to work. 
  • Ability and willingness to work a flexible schedule when required.

Additional preferred skills and knowledge:

  • Working knowledge of Raiser’s Edge (or similar database) and special event support.
  • Experience working with a major advocacy organization and/or within corporate fundraising or external stakeholder engagement.

Key Relations

The External Affairs Associate reports to the Director of External Affairs. The Associate also collaborates with the Vice President for Development, key program staff, as well as the President and CEO, Chief of Staff and COO, Vice President for Marketing & Communications, and colleagues in Development, Finance, and Communications teams.  

Compensation

A minimum salary of $51,973 will be provided to the successful candidate who has experience directly relevant to this role, consistent with the National Women’s Law Center’s compensation framework.

The Center offers a comprehensive benefits package, and four weeks of annual vacation.

NWLC is a non-profit organization whose headquarters and staff are based in Washington, D.C., with our office located in historic Dupont Circle. However, due to the COVID-19 public health emergency, all NWLC staff are temporarily working remotely. We continue to monitor public health guidance and keep safety, science, and flexibility top of mind as we evaluate what reopening looks like for our team.

Classification

NWLC recognizes a staff bargaining unit, NWLC United, affiliated with the Nonprofit Professional Employees Union/IFPTE Local 70, a union for non-profit workers. This position is included in NWLC’s bargaining unit. Specific employment terms are subject to collective bargaining.
