Pennsylvania Horticultural Society
Philadelphia, PA

The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) is an internationally recognized not-for-profit that uses horticulture to advance the health and wellbeing of the Greater Philadelphia Region. Founded in 1827, PHS today deploys horticulture-driven solutions that address four impact priorities: healthy living environments, strong social connections, access to fresh food, and access to economic opportunity. PHS is a community of hundreds of thousands of people and organizations who invest their money, time, expertise, and gardens into PHS’s cause. Together, the organization works in 250 neighborhoods; operates a free-to-all network of public gardens and landscapes; inspires and empowers gardeners; and produces the nation’s signature gardening event, the Philadelphia Flower Show.
In 2019, PHS adopted Vision 2027, a new vision and strategy that focuses PHS on health and wellbeing through PHS’s bicentennial in 2027. To achieve Vision 2027, PHS must align all its work around advancing the impact priorities, expanding and activating PHS’s support community, and becoming more diverse, equitable, and inclusive. In addition, the organization must more vocally advocate for horticulture’s role in addressing health needs and inequities.
PHS seeks a driven and entrepreneurial Director of Individual Giving (Director). The successful candidate will create and execute strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of individual gifts for PHS, including major gifts, planned gifts, giving circles, and 1827 Society membership. S/he will manage a portfolio of major gifts prospects and lead the cultivation and solicitation of four, five, and six figure gifts in support of PHS’s mission and Vision 2027.
The ideal candidate will shape and lead prospect research strategy to identify major gifts prospects and build constituency in an environment where the potential donor constituency is not immediately obvious. The Director will partner with the Chief Development Officer and program leaders to manage and grow PHS’s restricted giving circles and its high-level membership program, the 1827 Society.
The Director will report to the Chief Development Officer and lead a team of four direct reports: two major giving officers, a gift officer who focuses on planned giving and 1827 Society membership, and a Development Services Specialist, who performs prospect research and assists with portfolio management and reporting.
The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society has retained Freeman Philanthropic Services, LLC to facilitate this executive recruitment. Please send confidential inquiries and applications directly to Freeman Philanthropic Services, LLC via e-mail at PHS-IndividualGiving@glfreeman.com.
