Background

 

The Writing Revolution (TWR) is a national nonprofit organization which brings proven strategies to underserved schools that enable students to improve their writing skills, become better readers, speak more coherently, and elevate their critical thinking. We train teachers and school leaders in the Hochman Method, an evidence-based model for teaching writing primarily through courses and partnerships with schools and districts.

 

TWR is seeking a talented, energetic, goal-oriented professional for the position of Director of Development. The successful candidate will be goal and deadline oriented, possess exceptional oral and written communication skills, and be able to juggle multiple responsibilities with the highest level of accuracy and professionalism. She or he will have good interpersonal skills and possess a whatever-it-takes attitude, work well independently and as a member of a highly successful team, be inspired by the opportunity to help build a national model with limitless potential to prepare students for college, the workplace, and life success.

 

Job Summary

 

As The Writing Revolution (TWR) footprint continues to evolve, the need to formulate a formal fundraising strategy has become critical. Entering our seventh year of operations, we are positioning ourselves to serve at least 6,000 educators annually by 2023. To meet this goal, we must significantly increase our annual operating budget particularly at the state/regional level. The Director of Development will play a critical role in this growth by building a strong team and culture steeped in development, sustainability, longevity, reliability, ambition and equity.

 

Responsibilities

 

  • Meet fundraising target of $1 million+, mainly from institutional donors
  • Lead the writing of grant proposals, funder reports, LOIs and the preparation of financial reports for donors
  • Hire, manage and oversee a Development Manager who will assist with stewardship efforts, the Salesforce database, the management of a grant/reporting calendar, and support grant-writing and submission efforts
  • Research and solicit new institutional donors (Foundations, Government and Corporations) that yield new sources of contributed revenue
  • Steward existing donors for increased and continued donor support
  • Coordinate highly personalized prospect and donor updates and an annual appeal
  • Plan and execute cultivation events including an annual fundraising event
  • Manage prospect and funder pipeline ensuring deadlines are met with meaningful touch
  • Collaborate with Marketing and Communications Director and Director of Strategic Planning to create quarterly updates and enhance communication efforts with prospects and donors
  • Create and maintain systems for storing donor and prospect information, tracking deadlines, and ongoing donor communications
  • In collaboration with the Co-Executive Directors, engage board members directly in fundraising and individual giving initiatives

 

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 4 years’ experience in fundraising/development for a nonprofit, preferably in the education sector
  • A strong passion for TWR’s mission to ensure equitable education for all
  • A strong track record in securing major gifts from individuals and procuring five to six figure grants from institutional donors
  • Highly developed written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with Salesforce and project management software
  • Exceptional follow-through, commitment to quality, and deadline management skills
  • Experience creating and implementing short-term and medium-term development strategy and managing multiple projects from ideation to implementation
  • Expertise in lead generation and the ability to yield large individual and/or institutional gifts
  • Knowledge of marketing and communication strategies to support fundraising efforts
  • Expertise in data management, financial analysis, and preparation of budgets

 

Compensation

 

Salary Range: $100,000 - $125,000 + Benefits, commensurate with experience, discretionary performance bonus
