YOUR OPPORTUNITY

We are looking for a Director of Annual Giving who will lead our direct response fundraising, monthly giving program, and Development operations. Your position plays an integral role to the success of The Humane League’s Development program, and will be critical to helping a high-impact organization achieve sustainable growth. You are an experienced philanthropy professional, strategist, and team leader who is dedicated to our mission to end the abuse of animals raised for food.

As the Director of Annual Giving, you will be responsible for overseeing a comprehensive annual giving plan that helps to ensure that The Humane League (THL) will continue to broaden our donor base and develop a diverse, sustainable revenue stream that supports THL’s life-changing programs. You will play an integral role in THL’s Development program by supervising annual giving and direct response fundraising programs that includes direct mail, digital fundraising, and sustainer giving. This position reports to the Vice President of Development.

This is a full-time, remote position. This position requires domestic and international travel, this is equivalent to approximately 3-6 trips per year to support relationships and professional development. We are only able to consider applicants who reside in the United States and possess United States work authorization.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

The Director of Annual Giving will be responsible for executing the annual giving program and developing it into an increasingly significant portion of THL’s annual revenue. You will also direct and manage the day to day work of the annual giving team to support the execution of the development team’s goals and objectives.

  • Direct Response Fundraising: Oversee and grow the annual giving and monthly giving programs to effectively acquire new donors, convert prospects, and retain donors

    • Create annual revenue projections and fundraising goals for annual giving and direct the implementation of quarterly fundraising campaign strategies, events, matching opportunities, and more to meet them.

    • Design and manage the strategy and execution of THL’s integrated multi-channel fundraising strategy of outbound and inbound programs (email, direct mail, website, social media, texting, digital advertising) that engage donors through one-to-many marketing channels.

    • In collaboration with our outside direct response vendor, Vice President of Development, Communications team, and Digital Products team, develop and oversee the communications associated with an annual giving direct response fundraising program including conceptualizing, writing, and editing content that is in alignment with THL’s brand and mission, and managing the production of the program.

    • Oversee and develop our sustainer program, The Heart Beat, including stewardship and personalized correspondence with monthly donors.

    • Coordinate with the Director of Donor Relations to customize mass communications to the Mended Heart Society.

    • Work with our outside direct response vendor to manage the acquisition of new donors through both digital and direct mail channels.

    • Develop and manage the annual budget plan for direct response fundraising with our outside vendor. 

  • Management and Leadership: Direct and support the Annual Giving staff and development operations 

    • Manage a team of up to five Annual Giving staff who are focused on executing direct response fundraising campaigns and development operations. 

    • Oversee and maintain timely gift processing and donation acknowledgements for approximately 15,000 donors and counting.

    • Develop systems to improve the donation process for donors so that supporting THL is simple, enjoyable, and personal.

    • Partner with Operations, Finance, and Legal to ensure compliance with financial and legal requirements for donor data, privacy laws, tax acknowledgments, and more.

    • Manage all third-party donation platforms to ensure that they maintain current information and branding, distribute donations to THL on time, and ensure that the submission of any required documentation that may be requested by these platforms is fulfilled.

    • Coordinate with the Communications team to ensure that THL adheres to donor-centric language standards, and provide support to non-Development teams who communicate with donors.

    • Work with the Vice President of Development and Senior Events & Engagement Specialist to identify and develop strategic priorities and projects that enhance The Heart Beat monthly giving program.

    • Collaborate with the Vice President of Development and Director of Donor Relations to support the Development team culture goals.

  • Data Expertise: Oversee and optimize donor data, reporting, and analytics in our CRM

    • Serve as a department lead for our CRM (EveryAction) by learning and maintaining significant knowledge of the donor database to oversee systems and software that track donors and prospects.   

    • Work closely with the IT and Communications teams to ensure donor data integrity and efficient systems for data hygiene, coding, data entry, gift processing, and relationship management are maintained.

    • Research and propose new ideas that will support the donor pipeline to upgrade donors.

    • Utilize data to develop metrics for success, track progress, recommend benchmarks, and set revenue projections to assist with the organization’s annual budgeting and goal setting process in coordination with the Vice President of Development and Director of Donor Relations.

REQUIRED SKILLS
  • At least five years of experience in non-profit fundraising

  • At least five years of experience with executing direct response fundraising campaigns

  • At least three years of direct management experience

  • Extensive experience with relational databases (e.g. EveryAction), data analytics, reporting, and spreadsheet management

  • Experience in project management, including establishing project scope, timelines, and execution

  • Solid ability to communicate persuasively and with donor-centricity in writing

  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute strategies and overcome obstacles to achieve  goals

  • Outstanding organizational skills with a high level of attention to detail

  • Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize activities, and be flexible in adjusting expectations as new developments occur

  • Sound capacity to take initiative, work independently, and follow through to execute on project ideas

  • Ability to maintain the highest degree of confidentiality regarding all aspects of work

  • Availability to work night and weekend hours as needed

Starting salary $89,800 or salary to commensurate with experience.
