The overall responsibility of the Finance Director is to be a strong, compassionate, and collaborative leader who is an integral part of the HomePlate Leadership team, will help to achieve HomePlate’s mission to empower young people to return to stability, and help bring HomePlate to new, exciting levels of service to our community. 

HomePlate, a nonprofit leader in the field of providing services for youth experiencing houselessness in Washington County, is looking for a dynamic new member to join our leadership team. HomePlate started in 2005 with $3,000 and a vision of helping youth in houseless and unstably housed situations find stability. Currently, Beaverton has the highest rate of student homelessness in the state of Oregon. With a budget of $2,300,000 and 23 staff, we operate youth drop-in, street outreach, and employment services. HomePlate successfully connects 500 at risk youth with community members each year. Together they work towards meeting youth-identified education, housing, employment, medical, dental and other goals.

The overall responsibility of the Finance Director is to be a strong, compassionate, and collaborative leader who is an integral part of the HomePlate Leadership team, will help to achieve HomePlate’s mission to
empower young people to return to stability, and help bring HomePlate to new, exciting levels of service to our community. In partnership with the Executive Director and Director team, the Finance Director will act as a strategic thought partner and participative manager by ensuring functional and efficient financial operations. The position includes overseeing key financial and grant reporting functions, strengthening our financial processes, and ensuring that our financial policies and procedures are as clear and effective as possible. This is a new position, and we encourage candidates to be open to co-creating this with us.

Areas of responsibility include but are not limited to:
Financial Strategic Planning
● Lead budgeting at an organizational level:

○ Partner with executive leadership team in setting and implementing strategic financial
○ Support development and refinement of departmental budgets

● Support the board of directors in nonprofit financial literacy, fiduciary responsibilities, and strategic
● Monitor ongoing key financial trends and health indicators such as cash flow burn rate or revenue
● Identify and lead resolution of financial gaps
● Provide organizational leadership at the monthly Board Finance Committee meeting, including:

○ Preparing financial reports
○ Communicating key financial updates to the committee
○ Sharing key financial updates to leadership staff
○ Partnering with the Treasurer on committee management and evolution

Grant Management
● Manage organization grant tracking system
● Lead grant financial planning and strategy
● Partner with program teams to ensure grant compliance
● Manage grant financial workflow including:

o Prepare budgets and reports on grant expenditures for funders
o Grant reimbursement submissions
o Grant tracking and documentation in CRM platform (Salesforce)

● Manage fiscal monitoring from funders and lead responses and resolutions if needed

General Financial Responsibilities
● Lead development and implementation of accounting policies, procedures and controls
● Coordinate and lead the annual audit and annual tax returns
● Evaluate overhead and cost allocation plans to ensure optimal reimbursement on grants and contracts
● Track restricted funds
● Monitor payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable functions
● Update and track fixed assets; assist operations director in financial management of building and other
critical assets
● Manage bank accounts and monitor reconciliations, transactions including wire transfers, and credit

Organizational Leadership
● Integral part of the admin support team
● Oversee contract bookkeeper, manage vendor relationships, and oversee contract management and
● Be a thought partner to the Executive Director
● Demonstrate commitment to ongoing equity and anti-racist work both personally and professionally.
Operationalize equity and anti-racist practices.

Experience, Leadership Competencies and Personal Characteristics Desired:
● An understanding of the effects of oppression and discrimination against communities of color, people
with disabilities, the LGTBQIA2S+ community, and youth, as well as arecognition of how systemic
inequities can lead to families from marginalized groups experiencing homelessness at a
disproportionately higher rate than dominant groups.
● Ability to build strong, collaborative teams interact respectfully with individuals and groups of people
with diverse backgrounds and lifestyles, and anticipate / prevent or defuse problems before they
● 5+ years of progressive experience, with a focus on financial leadership; experience managing
automated accounting systems and familiarity with Xero or nonprofit fund accounting systems
● Intermediate to advanced Excel skill level is required, as well as a proficiency with Google Drive.
● A team player with strong interpersonal, communication, planning, and organizational skills who
leads by example, is easy to relate to, and is willing to help out.
● Possess a passion for excellence in all people, processes and services, as well as a willingness to
embrace and actively support the unique culture and values of HomePlate with a demonstrated
commitment to anti-racist practices.
● A self-motivated risk-taker who constructively and creatively challenges conventional solutions to
achieve goals and works well in an unstructured environment
● Receptive to feedback with an interest in both teaching and learning from others; open to modifying
systems/processes to be more efficient and accessible to staff
● Ability to effectively negotiate on behalf of the organization with vendors and suppliers.
● Ability to manage staff by providing coaching and support, delegating, communicating clear
expectations, and addressing issues quickly and compassionately.
● Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, think strategically, and maintain a sense of humor.
