Founded in 1893, Mercersburg Academy is a dynamic,
forward-thinking, independent, coeducational secondary school with
a strong tradition of devoting the necessary resources to attract
and retain the best students and faculty, and to develop and
maintain first-class facilities. Mercersburg is located in historic
south-central Pennsylvania, approximately 90 miles northwest of
Washington and Baltimore. The Academy enrolls 435 boarding and day
students (85 percent boarding) in grades nine through twelve and a
post-graduate year, hailing from 30 U.S. states and 40
nations.
Reporting to the Head of School, the Chief Advancement Officer
(CAO) is responsible for leading and managing the fundraising
program and advancement staff at Mercersburg Academy. Serving as
the school’s chief fundraising officer and member of the executive
team, the CAO will lead capital development efforts and work
closely with the Head of School to develop long-range strategic
plans. The CAO also directly supports the Governance Committee of
the Board of Regents.
Qualified candidates will have a minimum of 15 years of
progressively responsible administrative and fundraising
experience, preferably in an educational setting. The successful
candidate will be an experienced fundraising strategist and
relationship builder with a demonstrated record of accomplishment
with major gift solicitations, donor relations, stewardship, and
campaigns. Must have strong management skills, marked by a
collaborative leadership style, a desire to innovate, and the
ability to develop and mentor a staff. The successful candidate
will have exceptional interpersonal skills demonstrated by the
ability to interact effectively and appropriately engage with all
the constituencies of the school community. Bachelor’s degree
required; advanced degree preferred. Willing and able to travel
extensively and work extended hours, including frequent overnight
trips.
