The Organization for Autism Research (OAR) is seeking a dynamic individual to fill the Programs and Outreach Associate position. The ideal candidate is someone who is interested in taking ownership of the role and bringing new ideas to the table. They are self-motivated, detail-oriented, and skilled at balancing the day-to-day activities without losing sight of the larger goals.

OAR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to apply research to the challenges that autism presents. OAR impacts lives by funding applied research studies, awarding scholarships to young adults attending post-secondary school education, awarding education grants to support autism acceptance campaigns, and distributing high-quality information resources to families and autism professionals. As part of OAR’s two-person research and programs team, the associate will work hand in hand with the Director, Research and Programs, to execute OAR’s programs, shape expanding initiatives, and make a positive impact on the autism community.

The position entails minimal travel and occasional evening/weekend commitments that are scheduled well in advance. The associate will work in Arlington, VA with a hybrid office-telework schedule, and may be expected to represent OAR at community outreach events.

The Programs and Outreach Associate will be the right-hand person to the Director, Research and Programs, assisting in the management and execution of OAR’s research, information, and education programs. The Programs and Outreach Associate’s specific duties and responsibilities include:   

Responsibilities:

  • Managing the graduate research grant competition, community grant competition, and scholarship programs.
  • Maintaining OAR’s online presence (website, newsletter, blog, social media).
  • Conducting strategic community outreach during the annual Autism Awareness Month campaign.
  • Managing OAR’s online store and liaising with resource fulfillment center.
  • Supervising seasonal interns who provide support with day-to-day operations.
  • Developing resources on topics such as education, health, or sibling supports.

 

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher
  • Exceptional time management and organizational skills
  • Excellent communication, writing, and problem-solving skills

Desirable Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of relevant experience (e.g. non-profit, project management, communications, serving the disability community)
  • Background knowledge in/relevant experience with autism spectrum disorders
  • Familiarity with WordPress, Hootsuite, Mailchimp, Adobe Photoshop, and Microsoft Excel
  • Relevant study or certification (psychology, speech language therapy, social work, etc.)
