The Brearley School, a rigorous liberal arts independent K–12 school for girls, seeks an innovative and experienced Director of Advancement. The Director reports to the Head of School, Jane Foley Fried, and works closely and collaboratively with a group of engaged trustees, parents and alumnae as well as the school’s administrative team. The Director is foremost an experienced fundraiser with demonstrated success in envisioning and executing major philanthropic campaigns in support of capital projects, current operating needs as well as the endowment; cultivating and soliciting significant gifts; and strategically leveraging the participation of school leadership in fundraising. The Director of Advancement will be responsible for all aspects of development and alumnae relations, including major gifts, annual giving, alumnae programs and events and operations, while heading a team of dynamic, diverse and committed development professionals.

While Brearley is in a strong financial position, the Director must be highly motivated to advance the school’s mission and goals through ongoing fundraising success. Brearley has recently completed a $105 million comprehensive campaign garnering up to $18 million in total gifts during a single fiscal year. As of June 30, 2021, Brearley’s endowment is $168.8 million. The Director must be knowledgeable about and comfortable operating in New York City’s business and philanthropic communities.

The ideal candidate will possess:

Proven Development Experience: strong record of fundraising success and management of fundraising efforts; solid understanding of best practices nationally; demonstrated ability to plan  and successfully close significant major and principal gifts; experience in being a leader of a capital campaign and the skill and judgment required to effectively engage trustees and the Head of School in cultivating and soliciting principle gifts

Institutional Leadership: readiness to play a role on the school’s senior leadership team; ability to act as a strategic and creative thinker and expert in the development and communications arenas; capacity to collaborate with high-level volunteers including the Board of Trustees and staffing two board committees

Strategic Planning Ability: significant and successful strategic planning experience; demonstrated ability to organize a thriving development and alumnae relations program supported by a talented team of development professionals

Commitment to Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: demonstrated expertise in forming, nurturing and leading a diverse team of professionals and creating an inclusive fundraising model that engages the full community

Strong Management Skills: demonstrated experience and skill in team building and management including goal setting and providing feedback; demonstrated commitment to professional development opportunities for staff; ability to collaborate with various stakeholders within school and its diverse community of alumnae, parents and trustees

Personal Qualities: full complement of leadership attributes including integrity, empathy, warmth, intelligence, diplomacy, decisiveness, courage of convictions, ability to set and meet ambitious goals, ability and desire to engage with school’s various constituencies in development efforts

Education: Bachelor’s degree is required; advanced degree is preferred.
