An Invitation to Apply for:

Chief Executive Officer

Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund

The Jewish Community Federation and Endowment Fund (the Federation), located in the San Francisco Bay Area, seeks a strategic, transformative, and community-focused executive leader to serve as its next Chief Executive Officer. For more than a century, the Federation has shaped and strengthened the Bay Area Jewish community and beyond. While the community’s needs and the strategies for meeting those needs have evolved with time, one thing remains clear – the Federation has an essential role to play in the Bay Area Jewish community.

Over the past decade, the Federation has evolved and adapted to a changing Jewish and philanthropic environment, setting the stage for a major transformation. While some federations across the country continue to serve in a historical “umbrella” role as a fundraising and allocations entity for other Jewish organizations, this Federation has begun to shift its model to a more foundation-centric organization, relying on designated giving and other philanthropic tools to convene the Jewish community around strategic priorities. Through this commitment to institutional change, the Federation aims to ensure that it remains sustainable and relevant, and that its role in the Bay Area Jewish community is clarified, solidified, and communicated broadly and persuasively.

Looking ahead, the Federation has an opportunity to celebrate its past successes, leverage its current activities, and create something new for the Bay Area Jewish community. The Federation aspires to become a participatory and innovative Jewish community foundation that is infused with Jewish values and reflects the entrepreneurial spirit of the region. While much remains to be fleshed out and implemented, the next CEO will build on the strengths of the Federation; guide the organization pursuant to Jewish values; cultivate a broad and diverse Jewish community; and foster compelling engagement opportunities across the Bay Area Jewish community. The next CEO will work in close partnership with Federation board, staff, community leaders, and other Federation partners and funders to implement a foundation-focused direction, which will point to a new way forward for the Bay Area Jewish community and for Jewish communities everywhere.

Opportunity highlights for the new CEO include:

  • Leading a pivotal Jewish organization within a large, active, and diverse Jewish community known for its dynamism, entrepreneurship, and appetite for welcoming innovative ideas and new people into the community.
  • Transforming an organization and culture and implementing a new institutional direction.
  • Leveraging the foundation aspects of the Federation and working to increase the assets of the organization.
  • Defining a participatory and collaborative Jewish community foundation model and then implementing it.
  • Leading collaborative efforts on key strategic initiatives that will have the most impact on and be of most relevance to the Bay Area Jewish community.
  • Shaping a professional team towards great community achievements and impact.
  • Partnering with a board and staff who are eager to lead the organization forward into its next chapter, with an eye toward bold and pioneering change.
  • Building mutually beneficial relationships with a range of robust Jewish agencies, organizations, and foundations across the region and nationally.
  • Living and working in one of the most exciting and energetic regions in the country.

Compensation with be competitive and commensurate with experience, with an anticipated base salary range of $500,000-$600,000.
