Position Title:  Chief Development Officer

Status:             Full-Time, Exempt

Reports to:      Executive Director

 

Job Summary: The Chief Development Officer is responsible for leading all the contributed income campaigns annually. Campaigns include the Board, Major donors, annual fund, corporate, foundation and planned giving. The CDO works hand in hand with the Executive Director on executing and achieving goals, as well as Board leadership. In addition, the CDO will take a lead role in the LO’s Endowment campaign, partnering with the LOA Board, consultants and staff.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and board to develop and implement long- and short-term fundraising strategies to meet and/or exceed annual fundraising goals
  • Lead, coordinate, and manage the development team to expand income from annual fund, planned giving, corporate giving, major gifts, foundations,
  • Assist the ED with driving fundraising activities and personally engage with top prospects
  • Actively engage the board in all fundraising activities and personally educate each member on how to best cultivate, solicit, and steward their network
  • Regularly attend donor events, social functions, professional networking events, and community events representing the Louisville Orchestra
  • Maintain relationships with sponsors and major funders to provide reports on their specific gifts to programs and events
  • Design and organize a departmental plan of work to achieve annual operating goals for individual donors, foundations, corporate sponsorships, government grants, special events, and future campaigns
  • Develop a yearly communication plan for development to ensure regular and consistent messaging – collaborating with the marketing team
  • Oversee the production of all development collateral (including copy and design) working closely with marketing staff to ensure consistent branding and messaging (including season brochure, impact report, invitations, fact sheets, and other collateral)
  • Supervise and mentor the development team as it evolves by setting clear expectations, providing, motivation, assisting in their professional development, and maintain the highest levels of professionalism
  • Recruit, assign, and train volunteers to assist within the development office and special event duties
  • Oversee creation and develop materials/agreements for fundraising (e.g. sponsorship and underwriting opportunities, major gifts, planned gifts, multi-year gifts, annual reports, fundraising collateral)

  • Very detailed oriented and able to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Have a proven track record of innovation

 

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS

 Bachelor’s degree in a related field and minimum of seven years of development experience – with leadership responsibilities

  • A CFRE is preferred but not required
  • Demonstrated track record in a fundraising role is necessary, with a background in all aspects of development
  • Knowledge of the performing arts preferred
  • Excellent organizational, managerial, and communication skills (written and oral)
  • Flexible and adaptable style
  • Experience directly interfacing with and presenting to artistic, board, and organizational leadership
  • Passion and love of classical music is a plus
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and some holidays
  • Experience working and interacting with boards, committees, and community leaders

 The Louisville Orchestra offers a comprehensive salary and benefits package commensurate with experience and in line with similar positions of this scope with similar-sized orchestras in the country and Louisville cultural institutions.
