Salary
Salary Commensurate with experience
Closing date
May 25, 2022

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), an established San Francisco-based nonprofit organization defending online privacy and free expression, is looking for a full-time Associate Director of Institutional Support to join our Development team to develop and prospect institutional funders, organizational members, and donors. This includes traditional philanthropic foundations, corporations, and other institutional funders.

The ideal candidate is an outstanding communicator, both verbally and in writing, and demonstrates outstanding attention to detail and deadlines. The Associate Director of Institutional Support will work closely with EFF’s Senior Writer, writing and editing grant proposals and interim and final grant reports. The Associate Director will manage all required elements to create EFF’s annual report, as well as other written material about EFF. In addition, the Associate Director co-maintains the grants calendar with the Senior Writer, including deadlines and deliverables, and also manages a cultivation calendar, which includes plans for touch points, meetings, and phone calls with institutional funders.

We value candidates who bring diverse experiences and perspectives, professional and otherwise, to our team and to EFF as a whole.  If you can add value to EFF’s Development team, please apply.

What You’ll Do

The Associate Director, who reports to the Head of Resource Development, is responsible for the following:

  • Overseeing, editing, and sometimes writing all grant proposals, as well as the interim and final grant reports;
  • Managing production of EFF’s annual report and other written material about EFF;
  • Collaborating with Finance/Accounting and other key EFF departments to complete contracts and invoice and track payments;
  • Partnering with Head of Resource Development, the Executive Director, and the Senior Writer, to set ambitious annual and long term fundraising targets for institutional funders and donors, then executing and reporting on goals;
  • Proactively researching institutional funding opportunities and determining potential fit to EFF’s mission, strategic objectives, core values, and programmatic work;
  • Supervising the Senior Writer, advising them on projects, priorities, and deadlines, and ensuring work is sufficient to advance EFF goals.

Who You Are & Keys to Success (the must-haves)

To be successful in this job, you will excel in these areas:

  • Outstanding communication skills, both verbal and written: this applies to grant writing, of course, but also communication with your coworkers.
  • Inclusive leadership and management: You approach leadership with a mindset of “power with” rather than “power over” and regularly include others in decision-making. You have experience managing multiple projects and keeping tasks from slipping through the cracks.

If you were here right now, you would be:

  • Reviewing drafts of grant proposals, ensuring that the whole application package will be both top-quality and submitted with time to spare;
  • Checking the cultivation calendar to see which organizations you should follow up with;
  • Briefing the Executive Director and the Head of Resource Management on EFF’s institutional giving strategy and progress towards goals;
  • Monitoring workplace coronavirus guidelines and helping keep the office in compliance;
  • Scoping our annual report and talking to program staff about their contributions;
  • Working with the Senior Writer and others to ensure that the overall grant application load is ambitious, achievable, and of the most use to EFF and its staff.
