Position Summary:
UCI is a growing, dynamic, top-tier research university, the
youngest member of the prestigious Association of American
Universities (AAU), and routinely ranked among the nation’s top 10
public universities. The School of Biological Sciences is one of
the largest schools at UCI, serving over 5000 undergraduate and
graduate students. The development team serves under the leadership
of the Dean and supports both faculty and staff in the advancement
of the school’s research and education mission. Financial support
to students and faculty, visits with donors and prospects, and
pipeline development are key drivers for the success of the team.
The development team works in collaboration with the school’s
Marketing and Communications team to hone the School’s external
messaging, develop and execute public events and activities, and
promote our value proposition to the community. This is a key staff
position on highly relied upon team for the Dean and school
leadership.
Using advanced fundraising concepts, plans, organizes, and directs complex large-scale fundraising campaigns which include multiple components. Results have major impact on overall program goals and assignments and are typically at the "major gifts" or "corporate / foundation relations" level, including managing portfolios of donors capable of giving gifts of an agreed upon amount. May oversee work of professional and / or subordinate staff. May attend functions, meetings and serve on internal / external committees as a location representative. Position is expected to raise $1M annually for the School of Biological Sciences, its departments, centers, and programs.

Required:
- 5-10 years’ experience in development roles and non-profit organizations.
- Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Advanced knowledge of all aspects of fundraising, donor relations, and public relations concepts, principles, procedures, and techniques.
- Advanced working knowledge of all aspects of the location, including current issues of concern for both the campus and / or throughout higher education / healthcare generally.
- Advanced working knowledge of the location, its vision, mission, goals, objectives, achievements and infrastructure.
- Advanced knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, etc.
- Advanced written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to establish and maintain good working relationships throughout the organization and with outside constituencies.
- Ability to make persuasive and compelling presentations of goals and objectives for a location in order to secure gifts.
- Advanced organizational, analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification / avoidance / resolution, and strong project management skills.
- Very strong skills in maintaining confidentiality.
Special Conditions Required:
Occasional night and weekend work. Willing to travel up to 10% of
time overnight. Willing to travel up to 70% of time for daytime
meetings and events.
