The Brearley School, a rigorous liberal arts independent K–12 school for girls, seeks an energetic and experienced Major Gifts Officer. The Major Gifts Officer will engage and build relationships with the goal of strengthening the School’s giving program. The ideal candidate is a “connector” who can advance our mission and achieve ongoing fundraising success. They should be committed to the School's values of diversity, equity, and inclusion and eager to become a familiar face throughout the Brearley community.

 

Brearley has recently completed a $105 million comprehensive campaign garnering up to $18 million in total gifts during a single fiscal year. As of June 30, 2021, Brearley’s endowment is $168.8 million. The Major Gifts Officer must be knowledgeable about and comfortable operating in New York City’s business and philanthropic communities.

 

The Major Gift Officer will report to the Director of Advancement and will spend much of their workday outside of the office, meeting with parents, alumnae, and other constituents. 

 

Responsibilities include:

 

  • In partnership with the Director of Advancement, envision and implement a multi-year fundraising strategy for Brearley’s Major Gift program.
  • Create cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies for potential leadership donors. This Officer will carry their own portfolio of donors and should exceed 200 meaningful contacts/meetings per year.
  • Support the participation of the Head of School, Trustees, and volunteer leaders in major gift fundraising, including scheduling, briefing, joint meetings, and follow-up.
  • Maintain the donor pipeline, tracking progress with individual donors and the School’s entire pool of rated donors.
  • Lead donor wealth screening process and donor prospect research, including setting capacity ratings.
  • Manage pledge fulfillment processes ensuring timely reminders to donors.
  • Prepare solicitation/gift acknowledgment letters for the Advancement team and Head of School.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Advancement team and participate in engagement events and programs throughout the year, sometimes on nights or weekends, as required.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop Past Parent and Grandparent opportunities to enhance connections with these members of the Brearley community and to cultivate their philanthropic giving.
  • Ensure optimal development database functionality to support major gifts program.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree. At least five years of experience as a solicitor. Demonstrated success in fundraising.   Ability to coordinate and manage many projects simultaneously. Experience with a donor database. Proven success working with volunteers. Support for Brearley’s mission.

 

Competencies: 

The Major Gifts Officer must have excellent interpersonal and communications skills, strong writing ability and attention to detail, good judgment, and be able to discern work priorities in a fast-paced, goal-oriented environment.

 

The position requires the ability to interface professionally with high-level donors and volunteers and discretion with confidential or sensitive information.
