Summary

American Baptist Foundation (ABF) is a ministry of the American Baptist Churches USA, organized in 1985, which “supports the stewardship of all American Baptist individuals, churches, and organizations by providing gift planning, gift management, endowment fund management, and educational resources in harmony with the mission of our faith family.” It seeks to fulfill its mission by working with partners in ministry, which include the American Baptist Home Mission Societies (ABHMS), International Ministries (IM) and the Multi-Region Corporation (MRC), which includes most of the regional ministries of our denomination.

The ABF has some $180 million in total assets under management.  This currently includes endowment funds, 87 charitable trusts, 338 charitable gift annuities and other agreements.

The CEO is the chief executive officer of the American Baptist Foundation and is responsible for the day-to-day administration of its affairs and its staff.  The CEO reports to the ABF Board of Directors.

General Responsibilities

Board Collaboration

  • Partner with the Board of Directors, providing information to function effectively and make informed decisions.
  • Implement the current strategic plan and lead the Board through future strategic planning.
  • Collaborate with ABF members (ABHMS, IM and MRC) as well as other key constituents.

Financial oversite in managing Foundation assets

  • Supervise the investment activities of the Foundation; work with investment firms and oversee investment strategies.
  • Monitor and supervise all expenditures and grant-making activities.
  • Maintain and grow the assets of the Foundation.

Organizational Operations

  • Direct the planned giving and endowment programs.
  • Oversee both Foundation operational and field staff.
  • Prepare and monitor an operational budget for the Foundation.
  • Oversee the Foundation database and investment reporting systems;
  • Oversee Foundation publications and work closely with marketing and public relations for coordination of communications efforts.

Community Outreach

  • Continue to build public understanding and support for the ABF and its work in the community.
  • Serve as the “go to” philanthropic advisory/resource for ABCUSA ministries.
  • Engage in organizations that increase the visibility and benefit the profile of the ABF.

Professional Qualifications

  • A bachelor’s degree in relevant field.
  • Minimum of 7 years in a management or leadership role. Experience in nonprofit work preferred.
  • Ability to envision and convey the ABF mission and strategic direction to the staff, board, partner ministries, volunteers and donors.
  • Strong fundraising experience in working with individuals; an understanding of endowments and planned giving fundraising strategies.
  • Successful experience in making direct solicitation calls as well as developing cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Financial or legal background. Need the ability to understand and communicate legal and tax concepts.
  • The diplomatic skills to build and navigate relationships among the Foundation’s constituencies.
  • Strong management abilities to work with a talented, highly-effective staff to form a unified team.
  • Comfort and knowledge with supervising the investment activities of the Foundation. This does not require a financial background per se, but must be able to understand investment strategies and work effectively with investment firms.
  • Experience and skill in working with a national Board of Directors.
  • Must be willing to travel up to 40% and have at least 7 days in corporate office per month.

Personal Qualifications

  • Possesses a spiritual maturity as a follower/disciple in Jesus Christ and is committed to this position as a ministry.
  • Knowledge of the American Baptist community is a definite plus.
  • Transparent and high-integrity leadership.
  • Ability to gain trust and forge external relationships.
  • Strong written and public speaking skills.
  • An aptitude for understanding technology.

Compensation

$160,000 to $190,000 range commensurate with experience and other qualifications. Comprehensive benefits package includes healthcare, generous fully-vested 403b retirement plan, paid vacation and sick leaves.  A relocation package is available for the successful candidate.
