Executive Director, Women Enabled International

Women Enabled International (WEI) seeks a strategic, forward-thinking leader and skilled nonprofit strategist to be our next Executive Director (ED). The new ED will build on more than a decade of global leadership advancing the rights of women, girls, and nonbinary people with disabilities at an exciting time for the organization and the field.

The new ED will work to deepen the reach and impact of WEI’s work at the global, regional, and national levels following the founding ED’s retirement. Responsible for both long-term planning and day-to-day operations, the ED will lead organizational development and strategy, fundraising, Board relations, employee management, and provide program oversight. The ED will have the skills to manage a rapidly growing organization. With a current staff of eleven and an operational  budget of $1.8 million, WEI has doubled in size over the past three years.

In addition, the next ED will bring strong knowledge of disability rights and justice, international human rights, and intersectional feminism. As the primary spokesperson for WEI, the ED will be responsible for cultivating a broad network of partners, funders, and supporters and catalyzing partnerships within the disability justice and feminist movements.

As a tireless champion of our mission, vision, and values, the next ED will bring the humility, self-awareness, and bravery to uproot oppressive power structures and fuel disabled feminist leadership inside and outside WEI.

About WEI:

Women Enabled International (WEI) is a US 501(c)(3) not-for-profit feminist organization incorporated in Washington, DC. WEI works at the intersection of gender and disability to advance the rights of women and girls and nonbinary people with disabilities around the world. Through advocacy and education, WEI strengthens international and regional human rights standards on issues such as sexual and reproductive health and rights; gender-based and sexual violence; sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression and sex characteristics; equality, stigma and stereotyping; accountability and access to justice; and participation and inclusion.

Working in collaboration with activists and organizations advancing disability and gender rights and justice nationally, regionally, and internationally, WEI fosters collaboration across global movements to improve understanding and develop cross-cutting advocacy strategies to realize the rights of all women and girls and nonbinary people through three programmatic strategies: norm building and thought leadership, capacity development, and movement and cross-movement building.

Key Responsibilities of the Executive Director:

Organizational Development and Strategy: Establish a clear roadmap for the continued growth, expansion, and success of WEI, providing direction to programs, strategic communications, and operations in alignment with WEI’s mission and vision. Build on and deepen WEI’s leadership as the preeminent international legal advocacy organization advancing the rights of women, girls  and nonbinary people with disabilities and a key player within the broader feminist movement and other marginalized movements.

Communications and Community Relations: Serve as the organization’s thought leader and spokesperson to funders, partners, the media, and other constituents and allies. Engage in coalitions, panels, consultations and public speaking. Develop, strengthen, and maintain relationships with external organizations, including feminist and disability rights organizations, to foster and promote network-building for collective action.

Fundraising and Donor Relations: Maintain and expand on WEI’s strong fundraising track record to grow the budget and deepen its programmatic impact. Manage and nurture strong relationships with current and potential institutional and foundation donors, working closely with development staff. Cultivate relationships with new donors to expand and diversify revenue sources.

Financial Management: Ensure the long-term financial health and stability of WEI through strong financial management systems and policies. Working closely with staff, develop the annual budget and operating plan, oversee internal operations, and ensure legal and financial compliance through proper fiscal accounting and controls.

Board Governance: In close collaboration with the Board, utilize the knowledge, skills and experience of Board members to advance WEI’s mission. Expand and facilitate engagement by WEI’s global Board of Directors to support a growing organization. Collaborate with board members to implement and refine WEI’s strategic direction, financial and operational strength, and leadership in the field.

Staff Management: Manage and support staff to build and nurture a feminist leadership culture that cultivates a thriving, collaborative, trust-based team. Inspire, energize, coach, and develop a diverse international team with multiple perspectives and talents, actively seeking input from all staff and fostering recognition of leadership and expertise at all levels.
