The National Center for Civil and Human Rights (The Center) is an engaging cultural center located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, that connects the American Civil Rights Movement to today’s ongoing struggle for human rights. The Center is currently in search of a Director of Development to lead our resource development / fundraising efforts.  

Summary of Job

The Director of Development will lead all fundraising and development activities for the organization. The Center is currently engaged in an expansion capital campaign – both physical and programmatic. This role directs strategies and activities for annual fundraising and The Center’s expansion campaign.      

The Director is responsible for overseeing all development operations and activities; managing development staff; building and nurturing donor relationships; ensuring grant submission deadlines and reporting requirements are met; and working cross-functionally throughout the organization to identify opportunities for financial support of The Center’s work.  The Director of Development is a member of the senior management team of the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Implement the development strategy for the Center, for corporate, major gifts, and foundation grants
  • Lead, with the CEO, fundraising for the expansion campaign.
  • Monitor all donor information and present statistical analysis to board and senior leadership
  • Develop and mentor the development team
  • Identify and develop corporate, community and individual prospects for organizations fundraising priorities and opportunities
  • Identify new grant opportunities
  • Oversee and/or develop and execute philanthropic proposals, and archive all development documents with a long-term management approach
  • Understand and respond to the need of donors to meet or exceed their expectations within NCCHR parameters
  • Steward donors through the life of their relationship with the Center and nurture relationships to produce increased levels of engagement and funding
  • Oversee systems, policies and procedures for development efforts including, gifts, pledge processing, fund reporting, acknowledgments and tracking
  • Ensure integrity of CRMS database content, establish and implement donor records management and communications policies
  • Review and reimagine The Center’s membership and giving society programs
  • Lead the Center’s efforts for our annual gala: Power to Inspire (PTI)
  • Reconcile philanthropic revenue records with finance team

 

Required Skills and Competencies

  • Bachelor’s degree required
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in nonprofit resource development and fundraising
  • Minimum 5 years’ leadership and supervisory experience
  • Superior organizational and process skills
  • Excellent relationship building and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent research and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and other commonly used business technology tools
  • Experience with reporting on restricted and unrestricted philanthropic gifts.
  • Working knowledge of maintaining constituent records and donor management in CRMS database; experience with Blackbaud’s Altru database a big plus
  • A genuine commitment to the mission, values and work of the National Center for Civil and Human Rights

Physical Requirements

  • Capable of working on a computer for extended periods of time
  • Extended periods of sitting and/or standing
  • Ability to lift, carry, and or move up to 25 pounds
  • Bending, reaching, kneeling
