Grace Institute of New York and Grace Outreach (GI/GO)
Chief Development Officer
New York, New York

With a 125-year legacy of serving unemployed and underemployed, low-income women in the New York area, Grace Institute and Grace Outreach are collaboratively run nonprofit organizations. Their missions are to move young women in New York City to economic security though a full range of support, including the High School Equivalency program, college preparation and retention, workforce training, and job placement and job retention programs.

Grace Institute Mission & History
Grace Institute empowers underserved women in the New York area to achieve employment and economic self-sufficiency. Within a supportive and structured environment, Grace Institute provides job-skills training, counseling, placement services, and continuous learning opportunities that lead to upwardly mobile employment. Grace Institute offers these services so that participants can realize their inherent strength, resilience, and limitless potential.

In 1897, William R. Grace, an immigrant, shipping magnate, and two-time Mayor of New York City, founded Grace Institute. His goal was to create a tuition-free program to educate and to find employment for women in need. Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, over 100,000 women at Grace Institute have learned skills needed to successfully enter the workforce.

As women’s roles in the workplace have changed, Grace Institute has adapted its program to meet their needs. In the 21st century, Grace Institute empowers unemployed and underemployed women in the New York area to achieve economic self-sufficiency. Grace Institute provides job-skills training, counseling, placement services, and continuous learning opportunities that lead to upwardly mobile employment.

Grace Institute Today
Grace Institute serves women from all five boroughs of New York City, ages 18 to 64, through two different remote workplace training models: the Administrative Professionals Program, a 10-week program that focuses on the hard and soft skills needed to be successful administrator in any industry; and the Patient Service Representative Program, a 10-week program specifically focused on the growing healthcare sector.

After completing the program, the Grace Institute team works with graduates to secure career ladder administrative and customer support positions in industries including healthcare, banking, insurance, and more. Once graduates are placed in a job, Grace Institute continues to support alumnae through additional technology boot camps, networking opportunities, and resources for career advancement.

Role Summary
The programmatic strength of Grace Institute of New York and Grace Outreach (GI/GO) has never been stronger, with the COVID-19 pandemic spurring innovations in curriculum and program delivery that have yielded some of the organizations’ greatest outcomes to date. GI/GO is prioritizing the continued evolution of its fundraising efforts, so they are on par with these best-in-class services being provided to young women of the area.

The GI/GO development program raised $3.3 million in FY2021, a small increase from FY2020, with foundations, special events, and individual giving comprising the largest sources of revenue. Grace Institute added an additional $700,000 in city and state funding, bringing the combined total raised to $4 million. Going forward, GI/GO seeks to diversify its funding sources as it also reduces reliance on funding from the Grace Institute Foundation, created by W.R. Grace, which has historically underwritten administrative and fundraising costs. Individual major gifts and engagement of GI/GO hiring partners in philanthropy and/or sponsorship constitute major opportunities for increased revenue.

GI/GO seeks a Chief Development Officer (CDO) to lead its multi-faceted development program, engaging external stakeholders, continuing to build the growing set of government funding contracts, stewarding the collaboratively run organizations, and increasing total annual fundraising from $4 million to $4.2 million. The CDO will oversee a team of four development professionals working together to meet annual targets, steward donors and stakeholders, and engage volunteers in activities that create value for the women GI/GO serves. The CDO is a part of the senior leadership team, and they work closely with the Executive Director and the senior leaders at both Grace Institute of New York and Grace Outreach.

While GI/GO will consider a broad range of backgrounds, the ideal candidate will have the following qualifications/experience:

  • Commitment to the missions of Grace Institute of New York and Grace Outreach.
  • Seven or more years of nonprofit development experience with progressive levels of responsibility, including broad knowledge of all functional areas of fundraising (individual, institutional, major, and annual giving; stewardship; operations), including at least five years of experience in direct solicitation of gifts.
  • Knowledge of and fundamental adherence to the principles, ethics, and best practices of modern fundraising, including the integration of various giving programs to diversify the funding base and cultivate greater donor commitments.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strategic and operational management, leadership, and coaching, including developing a diverse, multi-disciplinary team of development professionals and contributing to the ongoing fostering of a high-functioning, results-oriented workforce. Track record of setting strategic direction, establishing goals, benchmarking, and shared accountability, as well as working cross-departmentally when necessary to achieve results. Experience managing budgets.
  • Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of how to build diversity, equity, and inclusion in the development function; culturally competent with respect to issues such as racial, cultural, religious, sexual, and gender identity. Skilled at delivering solutions in evolving, multi-cultural environments.
  • Demonstrated success in developing the case for support and in making strategic, innovative fundraising plans, and executing those plans to grow fundraising. Demonstrated experience cultivating, training, building relationships with, and working in collaboration with executives, senior staff, and volunteer leaders on development-related activities, providing them with quality support and intelligence and increasing their comfort with and success in fundraising.
  • Demonstrated strength in prospect discovery and in building effective strategies to compel new major donor investment. Experience integrating giving programs at various levels to cultivate greater donor commitments. A forward thinker with a track record of utilizing new methods of donor engagement and connectivity, who will be driven by innovation in developing philanthropic best practices in the current and post- COVID-19 world.
  • Proven ability to personally cultivate, solicit, and steward major gifts from individual and institutional donors at five and six-figure levels.
  • Demonstrated ability in planning and executing integrated, strategic, and innovative communications in support of achieving fundraising goals.
  • The ability to extract and analyze data to make effective, efficient decisions about donor strategy and process. Working knowledge of modern data management practices and technological innovations that can streamline advancement processes and contribute to the integration of related functions.
