The Aspen Leadership Group is proud to partner with Figure Skating in Harlem in the search for a Vice President of Development.

Founded in 1997 as a response to a direct need in the Harlem community, Figure Skating in Harlem (FSH) established itself as a safe space for young girls to achieve academic excellence and physical well-being through the lens of figure skating. FSH’s mission is to help girls transform their lives and grow in confidence, leadership, and academic achievement and the organization’s vision is for every student, regardless of socio-economic background, to acquire the foundational academic, social, and leadership skills to achieve their dreams. Headquartered in Harlem and ready to scale to new communities, FSH recently launched its first satellite chapter in Detroit — Figure Skating in Detroit. FSH is proud to be the only organization in the world for girls of color that combines the power of education with access to the artistic discipline of figure skating to build champions in life.

Figure Skating in Harlem’s holistic approach to youth development recognizes that both academic achievement and health education play pivotal roles in combating systemic challenges that girls face, especially those growing up within a culture of generational poverty. That’s why, for more than two decades, FSH’s award-winning programs have provided girls 6-18 from low-income communities with access to innovative, year-round education programs and health and wellness services to help them reach their fullest potential. Figure Skating in Harlem’s signature curriculum is designed to improve reading, writing, and math; introduce financial literacy and STEM concepts; promote positive social and emotional skills; and encourage good health and nutrition. FSH’s programs work with hundreds of girls annually on the ice and in the classroom. Staff numbers have grown from three to more than 75 coaches, teachers, tutors, and counselors. Families and educators recognize the effectiveness and the proven, measurable results of the FSH model — 96% reported improved leadership skills; 90% of students showed an improved competency in STEM concepts; and 80% of students showed improvement in reading or math using the organization’s standardized assessment. Many of FSH’s students return year after year and the organization boasts that 100% of graduating seniors go on to higher education.

In 2014, the International Olympic Committee featured FSH as a model organization in its Get Moving! Guide to Managing Sport for All Programs. In recognition of FSH’s leadership skills training, the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition awarded the organization with the prestigious Community Leadership Award for excellence in youth development. In 2021, FSH was one of five organizations worldwide to receive the Women and Sport Award for the Americas by the International Olympic Committee for excellence in promoting gender equity and inclusion.
