The American Fisheries Society (AFS), a 501c3 scientific society, seeks a strong Manager to raise funds and awareness for AFS by cultivating new corporate, foundation, and individual relationships and helping implement the overall marketing strategy for the Association.

This position will develop annual fundraising and marketing plans, ensure timely stewardship of gifts, accurately administer donor reporting and recognition, and identify new donors and contributors to expand the support base. The manager advances the AFS’s initiatives through events and campaigns to secure restricted and unrestricted funding. This position will oversee plans and activities to increase the awareness, engagement, and funding from contributors and regularly report on the effectiveness of campaigns and programs to achieve these goals.

The prior incumbent created a successful development program with compelling individual and organization components, as well as approaches for program funding. We are looking for an energetic individual to build on this work, particularly cultivating relationships with Foundations and working with our governance to involve them in development and fundraising.

AFS members play an integral role in governing the Society and serving on committees. The incumbent shall possess strong leadership and planning skills to manage the Development and Sponsorship Committees, form and orientate cohesive teams, set and attain development goals in conjunction with leadership. This position also plays an important role in forming and implementing association marketing strategy and coordinating the staff marketing team as well as managing partner coop agreements supporting AFS programs and the profession at large.

AFS staff are working remotely and we currently are evaluating future office needs. Ideally, we prefer candidates in Washington, DC area or within a day's drive in/drive home of Bethesda, MD for occasional in-person staff and partner meetings.

Experience and Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in marketing, communications, public relations or related field and five years’ experience in fundraising, partnership building and sponsorship development.
  • Extensive knowledge of marketing, fundraising strategies.
  • Experience overseeing campaigns, donor relations and generating resources and awareness.
  • Proactive, self-motivated individual who excels achieving goals
  • Strong communication skills with a creative flair for developing strong campaigns, donor appeals, presentations and communications.
  • Ability to align campaigns with appropriate communication channels.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit databases, social media, website maintenance and similar communications and awareness tools.
