ABOUT CITIZENS COMMITTEE FOR NEW YORK CITY 

For more than 45 years, Citizens Committee for New York City (CitizensNYC) has been reinventing New York City neighborhoods through resident-led initiatives and commitment. What drives its work is the powerful potential of local engagement to effect change. Founded by Senator Jacob Javits and Newsweek Editor-in-Chief Osborn Elliott during the depths of the 1970s financial crisis, CitizensNYC remains steadfast in its mission to empower all the citizens of New York City, regardless of economic means, to improve the quality of life in their neighborhoods. CitizensNYC’s experience as the city’s oldest micro-grant organization enables it to target critical community needs, often on a block-by-block basis. CitizenNYC couples its funding with project planning, communications, organizing, and other technical support. 

CitizensNYC is in the midst of rapid change. The ability to connect resources to neighborhoods where the need is greatest has enabled CitizensNYC to be a leader in responding to the crisis in vulnerable communities. The organization is building a leadership team that can address this and future challenges, empower communities, advance its ambitious growth goals, and increase its visibility and impact. CitizensNYC’s funds come from a combination of corporate, government, and foundation grants as well as individual donations. It has an annual budget of approximately $3.5 million. 

CitizensNYC seeks a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to serve as a trusted advisor and right hand to the CEO. The COO will lead program and project management and staff and workforce development. As the CEO’s deputy and ambassador, the COO will be responsible for many aspects of the organization’s operations, collaborating with the CEO and working closely with the rest of the staff and the Board of Directors.  

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

Strategic Planning and Innovation 

  • Contribute to the development of CitizensNYC’s strategic goals and objectives, as well as overall management and leadership. 
  • Develop strategies to address defined program/staff challenges and growth opportunities.
  • Ensure successful execution of programmatic innovations. 
  • Assess and recommend new areas for program development. 

Program, People, and Project Management 

  • Leverage data and learning to inform program outreach and team execution. 
  • Work in collaboration with the CEO and staff as appropriate; propose, develop, carry out, and monitor projects; conduct timely review of data to inform problem-solving and decision-making.  
  • Oversee government outreach, grantee convenings, and event coordination. 
  • Engage in all elements of public affairs and outreach as well as stakeholders in grant decisions. 

Staff and Workforce Development 

  • Lead a team and support their professional growth and wellbeing; oversee ongoing professional development and management of program staff. 
  • Plan and conduct scalable training models to build skills of full-time and part-time staff to create a sustainable workforce development model. 
  • Conduct regular meetings with the program team to ensure successful dissemination and implementation of best practices. 
  • Remain current in knowledge of relevant educational research and trends in the fields of trust-based philanthropy. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS 

  • 5+ years as a senior business or nonprofit executive. 
  • MBA or relevant graduate degree preferred. 
  • Nimble, business-like mind focusing on creative solutions with a good eye for streamlining processes and finding efficiencies. 
  • Must possess strong gravitas with experience developing and implementing strategic and organizational change plans. 
  • Significant experience working with elected officials, their staffs, and community leaders. 
  • Demonstrated track record of effective and prudent decision-making.  
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to administer multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize workload, and effectively manage resources. 
  • Resourcefulness, creativity, and strong problem-solving skills. 
  • Perspective on issues of equity, diversity, and inclusion, particularly as it relates to management practices and CitizensNYC’s work within underserved communities of color. 
  • Sound judgment, a high level of integrity, professionalism, a positive attitude, and a sense of humor. 
  • Versatile; a multidisciplinary and multi-constituency perspective with an ability to connect with people of diverse backgrounds and experiences.
