As the business model continues to change for journalism, The Post and Courier is looking for a grant writer to help us fund our investigative work.  

Subscriptions and advertising continue to pay for our daily journalism, but the kind of storytelling that takes months of work to research and can only continue with the help of philanthropy.  

A year and a half ago, we launched our Public Service and Investigative Fund with the help of our fiscal sponsor, the Coastal Community Foundation.  

We have raised more than a million dollars in that time, which allowed us to launch a watchdog team focused on education reform in South Carolina and funded the work of Uncovered, a continuing project highlighting corruption and abuse of power by public officials.  

We have an ultimate goal of funding a quarter of our newsroom through philanthropy.  

The ideal candidate will be driven by a desire to make a difference in the world through the work of a free press and will have a proven record of successful fundraising. Deep knowledge of journalism is preferred.  

The grant writer will identify, define and develop funding sources to support existing and planned journalistic efforts, as well as lead the development, writing, and submission of grant proposals. 

Primary responsibilities include preparation of proposals and grant applications, and performance of responsible professional and administrative work in researching, identifying, developing and responding to grant opportunities in areas that support the work of The Post and Courier.  

You will become an integral member of our four-member team focused on community-funded journalism, which includes Publisher PJ Browning, Executive Editor Autumn Phillips, Director of Development Robie Scott and Retention Marketing Manager Mary Fox.
