Position Summary

The Data Officer will report to the Director, Grants Process and play a critical role in monitoring, auditing, and improving data quality across our grantmaking systems, through mapping data flows, defining and enforcing data quality rules, monitoring quality metrics, producing data integrity scorecards, and ensuring proper implementation of data quality controls during the creation and modification of grantmaking processes and procedures. This role will primarily focus on all grantmaking data but is expected to work in partnership with Programs, Finance, IT and the Evaluation and Learning team to ensure wholistic data and reporting alignment across the Foundation. In addition, this role will serve as key member in a cross-functional data team, to discuss, prioritize and address data needs, issues and reporting needed staff members, the Board and external parties

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Leadership and oversight surrounding new data standards, policies, definitions, and tools for data quality and management that balance accuracy and standardization with decentralized speed and flexibility
• Lead a process of defining organization-wide metrics and goals around data quality, providing metrics and insights on key data areas, highlighting opportunities for operational efficiencies and improvements
• Partner and build relationships with key stakeholders in executive teams, program teams, and other cross-functional teams to deliver results
• Develop, and maintain proper reporting guidelines and procedures to ensure quality, security, sensitivity and compliance including but not limited to grant cycles, payments, program coding and compliance 

Data Management & Reporting:
• Key member of the data management team setting the agenda and facilitating discussions with relevant data domain departments (E&L, IT, Grants, Finance, and strategy teams) to ensure process for prioritizing and addressing data needs across the Foundation
• Develop and maintain a data dictionary, metrics and dashboards to focus staff and leadership on critical grant metrics to help make data-driven decisions (e.g., staffing, budgets, processes) to respond to changing circumstances and mitigate risk
• Partner with Grantmaking Training Manager to develop materials and train staff on new or updated data systems and processes
• Establish and monitor Foundation wide and department/process data quality metrics
• Produce monthly/quarterly/annual reports to meet commitments, and adhoc reports for staff and external requests as needed
• Define and manage robust data audits to flag and communicate and resolve data quality issues – and create closed loop process to resolve them
• Ensures and upholds Foundation’s policies on data privacy and security

Project Management and Cross Functional Collaboration:
• Identifies business needs and owns projects, activities, and tasks and aligns to overall Foundation strategy
• Lead and demonstrate emerging solutions, tools, and concepts to teams
• Work with internal stakeholders to maintain a prioritized queue of data deliverables/changes
• Lead consolidation and scaling of a fragmented data landscape and use data assets
• Ensure proper data quality validation within test plans and participate in testing as needed


• B.S. degree or equivalent experience
• 6-8 years progressively responsible experience in Data Analysis, Data Management, Data Governance and/or Data Stewardship
• Deep understanding of core data, attributes, tagging, data architecture and data flow, how systems interact, and anticipate risks/pros/cons in various approaches
• Experience with a variety of data and analytics tools and technologies such as excel, SQL. Tableau experience

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Hands-on leader with a history of implementing practice in-line with strategic goals
• Highly developed data management, operations, and organization skills with particular emphasis change management and adoption
• Ability to tell stories with data, educates effectively, and instills confidence in recommendations, motivating others to act on them
• Ability to work independently or as part of a team to design and develop solutions
• Strong systems orientation, with a track record of improving and enhancing existing systems, developing new solutions
• Demonstrated ability to think and act simultaneously at a macro and tactical level
• Experience working collaboratively with cross-functional teams (e.g., programs, finance, evaluation and learning, compliance, etc.)
• Exceptional customer service, problem-solving and analytical skills, including a proven ability to create and manage organizational change
• Ability to travel and occasionally attend weekend meetings and conferences.
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously to meet objectives and deadlines with strong organization skills and time management
• Experience with grantmaking and grants management systems strongly preferred
