The Fair Labor Association (FLA) combines the efforts of industry, civil society organizations and colleges and universities to promote and protect workers’ rights and to improve working conditions globally through adherence to international standards. The FLA is headquartered in Washington, D.C., and has offices in Geneva, Switzerland and Cote d’Ivoire, Ivory Coast.

 

Position Summary

The Director, Social Compliance-Accreditation is responsible for oversight and leadership of the FLA’s company accreditation program. They manage the team that evaluates companies against the Principles of Fair Labor and Responsible Sourcing and Production, providing ongoing training and guidance to staff.  In addition, the Director actively participates in company accreditations, evaluating company progress against the FLA Principles of Responsible Sourcing and Production and managing a portfolio of company-level accreditations; and is responsible for recommending and developing ongoing improvements to the accreditation program, consistent with the FLA’s strategic goals, and is involved in creating tools to ensure the consistency, rigor, and scalability of the accreditation process.

This position reports to the Senior Director, Social Compliance and is based at the FLA office in Washington, D.C. Remote candidates may be considered.

 

Key Areas of Responsibility

  • Oversee the FLA’s company accreditation program. Ensure that the FLA accreditation team is equipped with the necessary tools, training and guidance to effectively evaluate FLA member companies against the Principles of Fair Labor and Responsible Sourcing and Production.
  • Track overall progress of FLA member companies as they work towards accreditation and improve their social compliance programs. Report regularly to senior staff, committees, and affiliates on the progress and status of the accreditation program.
  • Develop and maintain tools to ensure the rigor and efficiency of the accreditation process. Work within the FLA’s assessment platform to ensure consistent tracking of company progress. Support the accreditation team in identifying additional improvements to the FLA’s measurement and tracking processes.
  • Serve as team lead for a portfolio of company-level accreditations. Evaluate company progress against the FLA Principles of Responsible Sourcing and Production and the associated key performance indicators. Review and score evidence against established metrics.  Ensure complete and rigorous evaluative practices throughout the process.
  • Lead the development of new enhancements, efficiencies, tools, policies and procedures to further enhance the Social Compliance Program, particularly with respect to evaluating the ongoing progress of accredited companies.  Develop additional metrics to recognize leading companies for work beyond baseline standards.
  • Maintain open and transparent communication with FLA affiliates and stakeholders.
  • Represent the FLA at meetings and professional gatherings as Articulate the value of FLA accreditation while educating stakeholders on the FLA’s standards and processes.
  • Other duties and special projects as assigned.

 

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in relevant field required. Graduate degree preferred.
  • At least eight (8) years of professional experience, preferably in corporate social responsibility, law, social research, human resource management, manufacturing, sourcing or industrial relations.
  • Deep technical knowledge of, and experience in, the labor compliance field, labor rights, human rights, and/or corporate social responsibility as well as supply chain management, sourcing, production, and design. Direct experience working in a social compliance function strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams, mentoring direct reports, and training assessors or staff. Experience managing international or remote staff preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically while also engaging in hands-on, tactical work.
  • Ability to synthesize large amounts of information quickly and accurately.
  • Strong commitment to the mission of the FLA to protect workers’ rights.
  • High-level communication skills, both oral and written; proven ability to deal with confidential and sensitive matters.
  • Travel up to 25% is required for this position.
