Full-Time (40 hours per week, full benefits)
Reports to: Chief Development Officer

Salary Grade: Director

Salary Range: $86,000-$105,350

Location: Washington, DC (preferred)

Organization:

Issue One is a nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy organization that unites Republicans, Democrats, and independents to win game-changing federal reforms to fix our broken political system and create an inclusive democracy that works for everyone. Issue One educates the public and Congress to pass legislation to increase transparency, strengthen government ethics and accountability, reduce the influence of big money in politics, protect the freedom to vote, and strengthen U.S. elections.

Since its founding in 2014, Issue One has had an outsized impact on Washington. Our Don’t Mess With US and election administration campaigns helped win $825 million in federal funding for states to improve their cybersecurity and manage their elections in 2020 amid the pandemic.

Our $15 million Count Every Vote campaign and the National Council on Election Integrity – a unique bipartisan group of more than 40 leaders of Congress, Cabinet secretaries, and business and civic leaders – lead a crucial effort to defend the integrity of the 2020 elections and push back against attempts to undermine faith in the democratic process.

Issue One helped lead the congressional push to establish a 9/11-style commission to investigate the attack on the U.S. Capitol, which passed the House, won bipartisan support in the Senate, and helped drive the national conversation about election disinformation, political accountability, and national security.

Issue One’s ReFormers Caucus of more than 200 former members of Congress, governors, and Cabinet secretaries allows us to form unique relationships with current decision-makers and brings heft to our legislative and communications work. In addition, our legislative work is backed by a strong research department, a savvy and innovative communications team, and a successful development program enabling us to have the resources necessary to win.

Position:

The Director of Foundation Relations leads and executes Issue One’s foundation fundraising strategy. A growing portion of our overall revenue, our foundation support has grown significantly in recent years with the potential for additional growth under the leadership of a talented development professional focused on this revenue stream. In addition to managing and expanding existing foundation support, he/she/they will identify and cultivate new sources of support. This person must be an excellent writer, as he/she/they will write grant proposals and reports, serve as the team’s lead writer, and will be responsible for some discrete major donor communications.

Responsibilities:

  • Manage, support, and expand existing foundation relationships and support, including proposal and report writing, grants management, and relationship management.
  • Identify and cultivate new sources of foundation support.
  • Serve as a lead writer for the 3-person development team, specifically for drafting weekly major donor notes and biannual reports.
  • Perform other tasks as needed on big projects, e.g., annual donor gathering, board meetings preparation, year-end mailing, and minimal travel support for CEO and CDO for their meetings with foundation staff.

Job-Related Experience

  • At least five years of experience in development, specifically in grants management and foundation fundraising.
  • A bachelor’s degree is preferred. However, significant experience with foundation fundraising, including the writing and preparation of grant proposals and reports,  will be considered in place of a degree.
  • A successful track record of securing and stewarding grant funds and relationships throughout a grant period is required.

Job-Related Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills are essential, including the ability to present concepts to a diverse set of audiences: foundations, donors, and the public.
  • The ability to identify new sources of foundation support and develop strategies to secure additional funding and cultivate long-term partnerships.
  • Must be able to work under deadlines and provide accurate, high-quality documents as requested from funders, and with minimal oversight and review.
  • Knowledge or familiarity with democracy or civics-oriented philanthropy is preferred. ...rtrtrtrtrtrtr
