The Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DAR) is seeking a Director of Development (DoD) for the George Washington University’s Office of Family Philanthropy, which fundraises from family members of GW students. DAR is responsible for leading the university’s alumni and fundraising efforts and seeks to promote a culture of philanthropy throughout the university community, including alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, corporations and foundations, patients, and other friends. Our goal is to advance GWUs mission of excellence in education, research, scholarship, and patient care.

Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Director of Development, Family Philanthropy will lead all gift officer efforts that drive university wide attainment from families of GW students. The Director of Development will execute the strategy for the overall program and directly supervise staff as applicable while leading through example as a front-line gift officer.

This highly specialized lead position works alongside development staff across the division and university to create and execute a sustainable development program that will broaden GW’s base of philanthropic support, particularly for top prospects. This role provides direct support to the dean, administrative leadership, faculty, and central and school based development staff to meet fundraising goals, execute events, and build affinity in support of philanthropic priorities. This position is responsible for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of 100-120 major gift prospects for their respective unit. This position will also develop and execute a strategy to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward gifts up to and exceeding $1 million. This position requires one-on-one engagement with the portfolio and will complete 8-10 monthly prospect visits in pursuit of this goal. This will entail collaborating closely with fellow school/unit fundraisers, deans, department heads, faculty and administrative staff of the university to accomplish fundraising goals, in addition to working closely with prospect research and development/alumni relations colleagues in identifying, cultivating, and tracking major gift prospects. This role plays a critical role in developing meaningful connections with alumni, parents, and friends of the school while developing strategies to move them across the donor continuum to result in stronger engagement and philanthropic support (outright and planned gifts). Additional responsibilities include preparation of briefing packets for university leadership, collaborating on the development strategy and management within several departments of the college or division in the portfolio, and participating in working group activities within development that advance university fundraising. This role is essential for achieving ambitious goals for philanthropic support for faculty support, student support, academic programs, and capital priorities, and will handle sensitive and confidential information. This position will provide senior leadership and mentorship to other major gifts officers. This is the highest non-management fund-raising position at the university.

The Director creates an environment that fosters sustainable development work under her/his supervision based upon best practices and standard performance metrics. This staff supervisor will serve as an honest broker of donor interests and fundraising opportunities for a variety of areas across campus and model a collaborative approach to fundraising at all times.

Responsibilities:

  • Manages a pool of 100 family prospects to meet individual attainment goal of $1M+ from both domestic and international parents.
  • Manages, trains, and motivates gift officers to achieve individual goals. Coaches staff on prospect strategy. Conducts annual performance appraisals, identifying professional development opportunities for any staff under management.
  • Implements the Family Leadership Circle and all other family fundraising program elements with the purpose of qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies to achieve constituency attainment goals.
  • Collaborates with school and unit development teams to implement effective parent fundraising strategy. Advises partner offices to execute collaborations including Marketing & Communications, Annual Giving, Alumni Relations, Technical Services/ Reporting, Student Affairs, and Enrollment & Student Success.
  • Performs other work related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization plus 6 years of relevant professional experience, or, a Master’s degree in a relevant area of study plus 4 years of relevant experience. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in higher education or independent schools preferred.

    •Demonstrated managerial proficiency through experience and/or education.

    •Strategy implementation skills that include the ability to execute monitor short-and long-term goals for engagement, donor acquisition, and retention.

    •Three or more years of experience working with parent and family donors at the major gift and/or principal gift levels.

    •Knowledge of the principles and practices of parent and alumni giving.

    •Familiarity with donor management systems and a high degree
