Job Description – Director of Development

 

Supervisor - Executive Director

 

The Director of Development is responsible for partnering with the Executive Director to sustain and grow the organization’s financial resources and development efforts. The Director of Development will work with the Executive Director on a strategic and operational level to maintain current development support while identifying and seeking new opportunities.  This position also works closely with the NCJW/Essex Vice President of Fund Development and the Communications Department.

 

Responsibilities:

Strategy and Planning

  • Serve as the staff liaison to the organization’s Development Committee, which consists of the President, Executive Vice President or Immediate Past President, Vice President for Fund Development, and Executive Director.
  • Design and implement a comprehensive development plan to meet or exceed NCJW/Essex development goals, in partnership with the Executive Director and Development Committee.

Development and Stewardship

  • Support the Vice President for Fund Development and Development Committee in the execution of NCJW/Essex fundraising events, cultivation of strategies for effective stewardship of existing donors, grantors, corporate partners, and other financial supporters.
  • Draft new and renewal grant/foundation proposals, reports etc, provide assistance and direction to volunteer grant writers, and maintain grants/foundation database and calendar.
  • Support the Executive Director in cultivating existing major donors and the recruitment of new major donors.
  • Coordinate with the Director of Communications on fundraising communications, such as but not limited to Special Gifts or Back 2 School Store campaigns.
  • Research and identify prospects, and solicit/cultivate new donors, funders, corporate sponsors, family foundations, estate gifts and strategic partnerships to broaden NCJW/Essex’s base of support.
  • Manage relationships with and solicit existing entry and mid-level donors.
  • Craft development messaging, in consultation with the Communications Department.
  • Move current donors up the gift ladder.
  • Re-engage lapsed donors.
  • Assist with annual budget preparations.

 

 

Administration

  • Oversee electronic record-keeping for all fundraising efforts, including populating and maintaining the Salesforce database, tracking and reporting all gifts, grants and pledges, and coordinating timely acknowledgements for all gifts received.
  • Create reports and provide fundraising data analysis.
  • Provide monthly reports to the Vice President of Fund Development detailing fundraising goals, accomplishments, and areas for improvement.

General

  • Provide staff support for NCJW/Essex members as appropriate.
  • Monitor annual development revenue against development goals.
  • Professionally represent NCJW/Essex in the community.
  • Follow all NCJW/Essex policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

 

Qualifications:

  • Seven years successful development, fundraising, and grant-writing experience in a non-profit setting.
  • Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to articulate the importance of the organization’s work to prospective and current funders.
  • Strong computer, technology and database management skills.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce or similar donor management system.
  • Experience working with volunteers and assisting them to meet targeted deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, both in-person and remotely.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills, including flexibility to handle multiple projects.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills and experience working with active volunteer boards.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and analytical ability.
  • Exceptional attention to detail.
  • Energetic, creative, and self-motivated.
  • Writing samples required.
  • Four-year degree required, CFRE preferred.
  • Strong commitment to and passion for the mission of NCJW/Essex.

 

Salary and Benefits:
This position is full-time at 35 hours/week.  Compensation is commensurate with experience.  NCJW/Essex offers vacation, sick leave, paid holidays, health insurance, a flexible spending account, and 403B retirement plan to eligible employees.
