ProPublica is seeking an enthusiastic, collaborative, experienced and goal-oriented fundraising professional to join its successful and growing development team responsible for raising over $40 million annually. With a passion for the mission of ProPublica and independent journalism, the assistant director will manage and cultivate a portfolio of donors and prospective donors and play an integral role in expanding the organization’s already robust major gifts program. The assistant director will report to the director of leadership gifts.


  • Manage a portfolio of major donors giving between $10,000 and $25,000.
  • In collaboration with the director of leadership gifts and/or ProPublica leadership, develop individual donor strategies, along with materials, to renew and upgrade donor gifts.
  • Actively facilitate cultivation and stewardship activities that strengthen long-term relationships with major donors, from research, to cultivation, to engagement, to solicitation, to stewardship, to renewed engagement and new solicitation.
  • Participate in ongoing portfolio review processes and work closely with the director of development services and other stakeholders to maintain a moves management system in the Salesforce database.
  • Assist in managing the ProPublica Leadership Council giving circle.
  • Assist in planning and developing substantive experiences for groups of donors, both virtual and in person.
  • Out-of-state travel to cultivate and solicit donors may be required, consistent with public health guidelines.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


The person in this position will be a critical member of the development team. The successful candidate will be a collegial and collaborative team player committed to building a respectful, welcoming and inclusive environment. The ideal candidate will have five or more years of experience in front-line fundraising, a proven ability to close gifts of $10,000 and over, and experience cultivating and securing gifts from prospective donors. Confidentiality, excellent oral and written communication skills, strong initiative and problem-solving abilities are all essential, as is keeping an eye on detail, prioritizing tasks and working accurately under time constraints. Excellent project management skills are required, including the ability to balance multiple tasks and deadlines, as well as being able to maintain disciplined adherence to department goals. Proficiency in Microsoft Office is required, as is some familiarity with Salesforce or other fundraising databases.
