Through a combination of emergency grants, strategic assistance, advocacy, and awareness, the No Kid Hungry campaign is helping children, families, and communities get the resources they need.

The Opportunity

The Managing Director of Major Gifts will join Share Our Strength at a time of exponential growth to solidify and propel the Major Gifts revenue channel as one of three major revenue programs for the organization. This exciting opportunity is ideal for a candidate who is eager draw upon their vast Major Gifts experience to shape, hone and refine best practices, systems and norms across their team as well throughout the organization.  The Managing Director of Major Gifts will serve amongst the leadership of the Development Team, lead a team of Development Directors and at least 5 direct reports, work cross functionally across the department and regularly interact with the Share Our Strength leadership, board of directors and national leadership council. 

Key Responsibilities

STRATEGIC LEADERSHIP

  • As a core member of the Development Leadership Team, support Share Our Strength’s vision and strategy while advancing culture of philanthropy across the team and throughout the organization;
  • Collaborate with the Senior Vice President of Development, Chief Revenue Officer, Managing Director of Development Operations and Director of Foundations and with the Executive Leadership Team to advance organizational opportunities for Major Gifts revenue growth;
  • Lead and direct the maturation of an explosive major gifts program into robust, sophisticated, and sustainable revenue channel;
  • Establish a sophisticated understanding of Share Our Strength’s mission, programs, history, relationships with key stakeholders, to drive and lead a cohesive major gifts strategy that yields transformative, multi-year investments;
  • Interact across the organization to translate programmatic and policy efforts into     creative, targeted appeals and messages to prospective funders at every step of the way - from concept to pitch and execution;
  • In collaboration with the Senior Vice President of Development build and lead strategies to leverage and engage Share Our Strength’s Board of Directors and other volunteer leaders in their efforts to participate in key fundraising activities.

FUND DEVELOPMENT

  • Expand revenue generating activities to support existing program operations and planned program and audience expansion.
  • Develop and execute immediate and long-term plans for major gifts revenue growth that are both realistic and challenging with a focus on increasing the number of multi-year gifts year- over-year;
  • Plan and oversee department fundraising strategies to include annual appeals, principal and major donor affinity groups, proposals, and solicitation and recognition events with the goal of meeting or exceeding annual fundraising goals.
  • Manage a small portfolio of high-value funders, at times in partnership with the Development Directors and/or other senior development leadership; 
  • Collaborate with the Development Operations teams and Finance Teams to prepare major gifts revenue forecasting and projections to inform annual budget(s) and quarterly updates; and
  • Work cross functionally with the Managing Director of Development Operations to build out systems to expand and grow a diversified pipeline of qualified prospects and ensure strong portfolio makeup for all team members. 

MANAGEMENT & OPERATIONS

  • Provide leadership, strategic direction, and management for the Development Directors, coaching team members to achieve ambitious goals;
  • Directly manage/oversee each team member’s respective revenue, to ensure team members are consistently meeting, if not exceeding, goals;
  • Working closely with the Managing Director of Development Operations, ensure that the Development Directors and their teams are maintaining a highly functioning, robust system of operational processes, including all data entry, moves management, and up to date proposal forecasting;
  • Oversee engagements with outside development consultants and vendors to support the optimization of the major donor program; and
  • Collaborate with the Senior Vice President of Development and Human Resources team to prepare and participate in performance reviews, provide recommendations for hiring decisions, and ensure that the development staff have appropriate training and professional development opportunities.

Required Qualifications and Experience

The Managing Director must be a passionate advocate for Share Our Strength’s mission to end childhood hunger. The organization seeks a highly credible, proactive, dynamic, and dedicated fundraiser with a minimum of 10-15 years of experience of fund development in the non-profit or healthcare sector, with at least 5 years of experience managing major gift officers.

Specific Qualifications Include:

  • Minimum 10-15 years of non-profit fundraising experience at a national organization with increasing responsibilities to achieve, and exceed, desired revenue goals;
  • Proven leadership skills and a minimum of 5 years of Major Gifts management experience overseeing multiple direct reports;
  • Experience managing a portfolio of relationships with high-net-worth individuals, philanthropic partners, and/or institutional funders;
  • The ability to embody Share Our Strength’s values when engaging with funders and the national philanthropic community;
  • Proven track-record of cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding funder relationships and securing and closing gifts in the six- and seven-figure range;
  • Ability to complete predictive and data-driven revenue projections and forecasting;
  • Prior success overseeing the hiring, managing, and mentoring of committed staff to consistently exceed goals;
  • Ability to ensure that Executive and Senior leadership as well as colleagues are brought along in fundraising processes and to communicate complex issues internally to the team and externally to prospective funders;
  • Excellent and persuasive interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate a clear and compelling vision across diverse sectors and populations;
  • A sophisticated understanding of how to curate and time proposals to align with a specific funder audience, and the skill set to coach a team on how to make these targeted asks;
  • Exceptional relationship building skills, with the ability to develop trusted relationships internally and externally;
  • Proven success translating strategy into practice and assessing its impact to inform future revenue opportunities;
  • Dedication to operating in a diverse, learning atmosphere and collaborating cross-functionally to empower teams to succeed and achieve the organization’s mission;
  • Commitment to prioritizing diversity, equity and inclusion principles including utilizing the organization's equity lens to inform all work;
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and G Suite and experience with fundraising CRMs, preferably BlackBaud NXT;
  • The ability to thrive in a collaborative, dynamic, fast paced work environment where priorities are often evolving to adapt to the organization’s needs and emergent opportunities;
  • Unimpeachable ethical standards, confidentiality, and personal integrity, demonstrating self-awareness and dependability at all times.

CFRE certification is considered a plus.

Compensation

The anticipated salary range for this position is $170,000 – $190,000. Share Our Strength offers its employees excellent benefits including paid time off, health and dental insurance.
