Departmental Overview
University Development and Alumni Relations (UDAR) strengthens Berkeley's excellence through engagement with alumni, parents, undergraduate and graduate students, and friends of the University, raising public awareness about Berkeley and increasing private philanthropy. UDAR provides overall direction for the campus' philanthropic advancement strategies and works to strengthen unit development in partnership with campus fundraisers. The Division handles a range of central activities and services encompassing communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, and more.

A full-service professional team, External Relations and Marketing Communications in UDAR delivers donor-centered and integrated editorial, design, digital, event, and logistical solutions to inspire philanthropy and engage UC Berkeley donors, alumni, parents, and students.

External Relations serves and engages the university's external and internal constituencies through programs, events, awards, and services. They also advise the university community on all matters of protocol, including visits by high-ranking government officials, the UC Office of the President, Regents, and other dignitaries.

Marketing Communications produces digital, multimedia, print donor materials; creates strategies for external-facing marketing and communications, media, and social media; develops fundraising messaging, talking points, slide decks; write proposals, concept proposals, gift acknowledgements, direct mail; and creates flexible campaign brand identity and language resources to build custom pieces.

Position Overview
This position shapes content and strategy for print, digital, and multimedia communications advancing the university's $6 billion comprehensive fundraising campaign. Works closely with senior management and unit leadership to conceive and implement long- and short-term communications plans. Oversees a team of ten high-performing professionals, including eight editors and two video producers. The senior editorial director is a strategic thought partner to the executive director, handles the content creation for the UCBF meetings, advancement speech writer for the Chancellor, and media relations contact for issues and media inquiries relating to philanthropy.

Additional projects may include, but are not limited to: talking points and key messages, remarks, major gift level collateral and confidential materials — such as proposals and case statements — videos, reports and brochures, slide decks, event materials, and occasional print and digital articles expressing the university's viewpoint.

Responsibilities
  • Works with senior leadership, partner-clients, and subordinate staff to shape content and strategy for print, digital, and multimedia campaign communications, often with complex and/or sensitive communications requirements. Provides guidance and assistance to subordinate supervisors and professionals on most complex issues. Example: The senior editorial director manages a team overseeing science-based proposal writing, media relations, video-focused multimedia, and communications strategy to advance philanthropic and campaign-related donor initiatives.
  • Works with departmental administration to create, develop, and implement comprehensive long- and short-term strategic communications plans. Provides advice and counsel on all aspects of communications, including planning, effective messaging, problem resolution, etc. Ultimately responsible for final deliverables. Examples: The position is the strategic thought partner to the executive director, handles the content creation for the UCBF meetings, advancement speech writer for the Chancellor, and media relations contact for issues and media inquiries relating to philanthropy.
  • Selects, trains, manages, guides, directs, evaluates, and as required, takes corrective action with seven employees (writer editor 4).
  • Works closely with senior director of strategic communications and operations and managing editor to ensure production of high-quality products that effectively deliver the desired message within budget and time constraints.
  • Oversees subordinate staff who represents team — or acts as a proxy representative for executive director — at campus meetings. Cultivates coordination and collaboration with campus advancement and public affairs communicators.

    Required Qualifications
  • Excellent knowledge and understanding of all aspects of communications, including print, digital, and multimedia communications strategy and development.
  • Excellent skills to create, develop and implement long- and short-term strategic communications plans based on project objective and target audience(s). Skilled at identifying effective strategies for key messaging and delivery platform(s) and managing complex stakeholder review and approval processes.
  • Excellent skills to advise and consult management on all aspects of communications, ranging from developing effective communication strategies to appropriately responding to inquiries regarding sensitive or complex issues or information.
  • Exceptional written, verbal, interpersonal communications, active listening, collaboration skills. Ability to obtain goals by exercising political acumen and discretion.
  • Excellent management skills to select and train, lead and direct, motivate and coach, and evaluate professional communications staff to produce high-quality work; skill to take corrective action as required.
  • Excellent analytical, critical thinking, project management and problem recognition, facilitation, and resolution skills.
  • Excellent skills to ensure production of high-quality work within budget and time constraints.

    Education/Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training

    Preferred Qualifications
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of technical applications including design concepts, various media and mediums, applications, etc. to effectively manage / supervise professional technical staff.
  • Thorough knowledge of the location, including its mission, vision, goals, policies, and infrastructure; strong knowledge of current affairs and issues in higher education and / or health sciences.
  • Excellent knowledge and skills in financial and personnel administration and management.

    Salary & Benefits
    This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is range $105,600 - $200,000, commensurate with experience.

    Percentage of remote work is negotiable, with an expectation that there will be required in-person events and meetings. Any travel costs would need to be covered by the employee.
