MIRIAM’S KITCHEN MISSION
Miriam’s Kitchen is the leader in the fight to end chronic and
Veteran homelessness in D.C. Founded in 1983 as a soup kitchen,
Miriam’s Kitchen has evolved over the years to provide more than
meals. Today, Miriam’s Kitchen is a critical player in the fight to
end chronic homelessness in D.C. On the direct services level, we
help our guests improve their health, increase their income and
obtain housing through a range of programs and partnerships. And at
the systems level, we work with leaders across the city to make
instances of homelessness rare, brief, and non-recurring.

POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the newly created
Director of Human Resources (Director) serves as an integral member
of the operations team and works collaboratively across the
organization to ensure that Miriam’s Kitchen attracts, develops,
and retains the talent needed to achieve its mission. The Director
will also work closely with the Director of Diversity, Equity, and
Inclusion to identify, develop, and implement progressive
organizational policies, practices, and systems that embed equity
and inclusion into all aspects of the HR function and the culture
of Miriam’s Kitchen.
The ideal candidate is a values-driven, flexible, and collaborative HR generalist with a demonstrated track record of designing and executing progressive best-in-class human resource solutions across a growing organization. They are a hands-on problem-solver who can excel in a broad role that requires equal parts strategic thinking, execution, and attention to detail.
The Director will provide strategic HR and organizational
leadership responsibilities for Miriam’s Kitchen.
These responsibilities include:
Human Resource Systems and Benefits Administration
- Manage and oversee day-to-day administrative functions, implementing appropriate HR systems, and leveraging technology to support efficient and effective management of HR information and data
- In coordination with the COO, oversee the organization’s compliance responsibilities, managing policies and systems to ensure the organization adheres to all relevant regulations
- Provide benefits training for staff
- Oversee annual open enrollment communications and elections process, including changes to enrollment throughout the year
- Complete Cafeteria and 403b testing annually
- Process claims for Workers’ Compensation, Short-Term Disability and Long-Term Disability
Recruiting, Onboarding, and Retention
- Design, implement, and fully integrate all aspects of Miriam’s Kitchen’s people functions, ensuring the organization has the talent needed to meet its mission
- Manage employee recruitment and retention activities and processes, including creating and maintaining current job descriptions and all aspects of the recruitment of a diverse workforce to support Miriam’s Kitchen’s growth
- Optimize an effective and seamless onboarding process for new hires, working in close partnership with hiring managers across the organization
- Recommend and implement compensation, promotion, and retention strategies to ensure that Miriam’s Kitchen provides fair and equitable compensation for all employees
- Enhance existing performance evaluation process to increase 360 degree feedback
- Develop role-specific standards for success at all levels, from entry-level staff to senior leaders, that align with Miriam’s Kitchen’s values and mission-impact goals
- Assist programs and staff in developing their professional capacity by identifying and providing resources, training, and learning opportunities
Employee Relations
- Lead MK employee relations efforts as it relates to grievance process, mediations and exit interviews
- Advise and train supervisors in best practices for employee relations practices
- Manage employee disciplinary meetings, terminations, and investigations
Culture, Equity, and Inclusion
- In partnership with the COO and Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, ensure that policies and practices at the organizational level reflect Miriam’s Kitchen’s commitment to equity and inclusion, with transparent systems for accountability and feedback
- Foster and model a culture of personal, professional, and team development, creative problem solving, innovation, and openness to change
- Promote collaboration, communication, and commitment to one another’s success across programs and teams
Organizational Leadership
- As a member of the Directors’ Team, your leadership responsibilities will also include:
- Develop, lead, and implement key organizational priorities
- Ensure effective collaboration between the organization’s teams
- Promote and maintain a healthy organizational culture that values diverse perspectives
- Maintain staff and guest safety
- Facilitate internal communications both within the operations team and to senior leadership
- Provide input on key strategic decisions
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong interest in and commitment to Miriam’s Kitchen’s mission of ending chronic homelessness in DC
- Proven ability to manage the complex and multi-faceted HR and organizational development needs of a growing organization, with the ability to manage employee recruitment and retention, performance management and development systems, benefits, and related compliance issues
- Experience applying creativity and analytical skills to support mission-driven organizations in meeting goals
- Hands-on experience with benefit administration platforms
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and concisely to diverse audiences
- Strong planning, organizational, problem solving, collaboration, and project-management skills
- Can work independently, prioritize, and multi-task effectively
- Energetic, self-driven, curious, and intentionally focused on building inclusive, equitable teams that are continually improving
- High standards of confidentiality, sound judgment, discretion, and diplomacy, with a high degree of personal integrity, including the ability to manage sensitive or confidential information
- At least seven to 10 years of progressively responsible experience in human resources
- Certified Professional (SHRM-CP or PHR) required
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
