Background About SEforALL

Sustainable Energy for All (SEforALL) is an international organization working with leaders in government, the private sector and civil society to drive further, faster action on Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG7)—which calls for universal access to sustainable energy by 2030—and the Paris Agreement, which calls for reducing greenhouse gas emissions to limit climate warming to well below 2° Celsius. Achieving these goals requires a radical rethink of the ways we produce, distribute and consume energy. SEforALL is at the heart of this foundational shift, working to ensure no one is left behind.

The then-United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon launched Sustainable Energy for All as a UN initiative in 2011. Now an independent organization, we maintain close links with the UN, including through a ten-year relationship agreement, partnerships with UN agencies and with SEforALL's CEO acting as the UN Secretary-General's Special Representative for Sustainable Energy for All and as Co-Chair of UN-Energy. These roles include advising the UN Secretary General and his staff on issues relating to sustainable energy and the implementation of SDG7 and supporting the coordination of sustainable energy issues in the United Nations system.

Aiming to achieve the ambitions of SDG7 in the context of the Paris Agreement on climate change involves transformation at a scale never undertaken before. Swift action is needed by leaders in governments, companies, institutions, financiers, development banks, unions, communities and civil society. As we progress through the final decade (2020-2030) to achieve SDG7, SEforALL is working to set the global agenda whilst supporting key countries with policy development and implementation on the ground.

A charitable organization registered in Austria, Sustainable Energy for All’s annual budget is approximately USD 10 million and the organization is growing.  Its donors include IKEA Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, ClimateWorks Foundation, the Clean Cooling Collaborative, Good Energies Foundation, Shell Foundation, Google, Enel and the governments of the United States, UK, Austria, Iceland, Italy and Switzerland.  We work with the United Nations foundation as a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor in the United States, and with UNOPS in Denmark as a fund manager.
