Job Description:

Alfred State invites applications and nominations for the Major Gift Officer search. This leadership appointment provides an exceptional opportunity for a fundraising professional to serve as a lead fundraiser for Alfred State.


The Opportunity

The Major Gift Officer typically solicits significant, principal-level gifts, including current gifts, pledges and planned gifts.  Working closely with deans, faculty, volunteers and other stakeholders, this officer is expected to meet defined visit and solicitation goals.  With extensive knowledge of fundraising processes and procedures, the Major Gift Officer independently prioritizes work tasks that have been set in consultation with the President and Executive Director.  The Major Gift Officer is responsible for developing, initiating, cultivating, securing, and acknowledging major gifts as well as annual fund gifts of lesser value to the Alfred State College Development Fund, Inc. in support of Alfred State. Through frequent travel, the Major Gift Officer will foster relationships with Alfred State's alumni and friends as they make philanthropic decisions.


Primary Responsibilities:

Works closely with the President, Executive Director and colleagues in Institutional Advancement, as well as the deans, faculty, and key volunteers to develop, prepare and pursue a coordinated and detailed strategic fundraising program of cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of major gift prospects and donors. 
Leading the college through the process and all phases of a new campaign.
Develops and manages a donor/prospect portfolio of approximately 125 individuals/organizations capable of making gifts of $50,000+, including individuals in early-stage cultivation and/or with whom the college has little to no relationship.
Assists in researching and identifying prospects for major and planned gifts.
Cultivates and solicits donors, including the development and implementation of the prospect strategy, preparation of written materials and solicitation individually or in tandem with volunteers, deans, and staff.
Documents contacts and strategies through Raiser's Edge NXT in accordance with the policies and procedures for accepting, recording and acknowledging gifts.
Regular attendance and reporting at the Alfred State College Development Fund Board meetings.
Conduct 6-10 monthly visits with alumni and friends of the college or more as needed.
Supports strategic operating plans for the College as directed by the Executive Director; establishes coordinated goals and implements programs to meet goals, and development policies and priorities.
Attend appropriate college and alumni events to cultivate relationships with donors, prospects, key volunteers, and all internal partners.
Maintain and document timely travel and business-related expenses at budgeted levels.
Participate as a full member of the Advancement team, attending full staff meetings, gift officer meetings, professional development activities, and other staff meetings as appropriate.
Recruits and manages volunteers when appropriate.
Pursues professional growth activities with approval and support of the Executive Director.
Uses best practices in conducting all fundraising activities.
Adheres to college and Foundation policies, procedures and regulations.
Other duties as assigned.




Bachelor's degree required.  Minimum of three years in development or comparable revenue-generation experience, including personal solicitation and proven success in goal achievement. Candidates must have or be eligible to obtain a valid driver's license.

Demonstrated record of cultivation and closing significant major gifts ($1M+)
Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to listen and interact effectively with donors and high-level volunteers.
Experience working in and/or comfort with data- and metrics-driven environment.
Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
Excellent written and oral communication skills; negotiation skills; and the ability to deal with complex concepts and ambiguity.
Demonstrated commitment to collaboration.
Excellent and mature judgement.
Technical/digital competence.
Strong critical and creative thinking
Ability to direct work independently to accomplish assigned tasks and goals
Ability to travel up to 50% of the time, including local and regional visits, and work evenings and occasional weekends.

Must be a self-starter
Ability to use personal computer in a Microsoft environment
Ability to travel in and out of state
