We are seeking an Associate Director of Communications to work a flexible hybrid schedule or fully remote on a full-time 37.5-hour per week basis. 

 

Summary

The ideal candidate for this position is a professional who aims to grow in their communications career, engage their skills in an academic setting, and embraces JEDI (justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion). The Associate Director of Communications is an integral member of the Office of Development & Community Relations at the University. They are the liaison between the University, the public, and the media. Under the direction of the Director of Development and Community Relations, this position helps plan and implement University communications strategy, communications initiatives, brand integrity, publications, and events. The goal of the Associate Director of Communications is to gain visibility and positive public recognition for the University, its distinguished faculty, and exceptional students and alumni. The position collaborates with the Director of Development and Community Relations to provide leadership and planning for stand-alone and integrated communications within the University, with the University donors, and with a worldwide community of scholars-practitioners. Together with colleagues and contractors, this position researches and prepares a variety of written materials, including but not limited to University-wide emails, regularly produced magazines and newsletters, as well as special project mailings, brochures, and press releases. 

 

The position is expected to help raise public acclaim by developing a consistent and coordinated system of communications to create and share links between the University constituencies’ opinions, research, and study to important world events. They also plan and manage, as appropriate, community events to promote awareness and support for the University.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

Applicants should have a bachelor’s degree in humanities, journalism, communications, marketing, or related field. A Master’s degree in a related field is desirable. At least five years of professional experience in communications, journalism, public relations, brand management, or related field. Experience in successfully delivering executive communications requests and producing high-quality communications materials such as magazines. Experience in an academic or nonprofit setting is highly desirable. Experience with and/or deep understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

 

Knowledge, skills and abilities:

1.  Exceptional writing and editing skills for a diversity of audiences in a variety of media.

2.  Excellent public speaking skills. 

3.  Demonstrated portfolio of produced and written materials online and in print. 

4.  Demonstrated excellence in news judgement, reporting, and interviewing. 

5.  Ability to cultivate and maintain a wide variety of professional relationships with diverse constituencies by developing rapport with others and establishing positive working relationships, both internally and externally.

6.  Ability to work independently and to work collaboratively with others. 

7.  Ability to exercise tact, discretion, and diplomacy and to represent the University effectively. 

8.  Highly organized project management skills with strong ability to perform work with a high-level of attention to detail and accuracy and the ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.

9.  Excellent interpersonal skills including a high level of emotional intelligence, the ability to exercise discretion dealing with confidential and sensitive information, maintain neutrality and lead difficult conversations.
