The Position |
Chief Operations Officer

The Chief Operations Officer (COO) must be a skilled, visionary leader who is passionate about the welfare and support of at-risk families. S/he should have a strategic acumen with a focus on details.

The COO is responsible for operationalizing the organization's strategic planning processes, forging working relationships and synergies across the organization, and establishing greater transparency and accountability for those people carrying out the organization's strategy. The COO works collaboratively with all senior leaders in a complex, multi-stakeholder environment to position the organization as a thought leader and key stakeholder in the prevention community.

The COO will work with the chief executive officer (CEO) to create, communicate, execute, and sustain strategic initiatives within the organization.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and execute the annual strategic planning cycle; responsible for managing the strategy implementation process for key strategic actions; ensure strategic actions are completed at organizational and functional levels to achieve desired results.
  • Work closely with senior leaders to develop, coordinate and oversee the implementation of strategic initiatives in coordination with the CEO to increase sustainability, relevance, and growth of the organization.
  • Respond to government and foundation requests for proposals and applications in partnership with development, finance and leadership; coordinate planning and activities necessary for development and/or expansion of key strategic initiative designs in response to RFPs; serve as primary liaison and/or point of contact for identified contractual and grant partners when appropriate; maintain existing and cultivate new relationships.
  • Play a critical role in embedding equity in Homeless No More's work; bring expertise, an innovative and open mindset, and a commitment to inclusive practice that values different backgrounds and life experiences of all team members and partners.
  • Foster a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development is executed in a manner that aligns with the strategic plan and overall revenue growth; oversee the development function efficiently.
  • Clarify the organization's strategy with every department and function, ensuring that all team members understand the details of the strategic plan and how their work connects to the agency's goals.
  • Act as a strategic partner with the senior leadership team guiding the development and implementation of exemplary common practices and strategic frameworks across all associated areas of responsibility; as a member of the executive team, makes decisions on a wide range of complex issues; participate in various management committees.
  • Provide leadership in the design, development, and implementation of new policies, practices, and procedures, regarding the overall direction and activities of the organization that promote the agency's culture and vision with the approval of the chief executive officer.
  • Collaborate with the chief financial officer to ensure that business plans, budgets, expenses and purchases for the organization are appropriate.
  • Provide leadership in establishing an up to date operational environment for all agency functions including IT, security, capital improvements and emergency systems.
  • Provide on-going support and expertise to all Homeless No More team members assisting them in establishing and meeting or exceeding all set goals, objectives, policies, and procedures for all the organic functions of the organization.
  • Ensure that the organizational structure is staffed with competent people and alter and/or modify the structure as the strategic direction of the organization is modified over time; provide guidance and direction to all personnel in alliance with HR consultant(s) and the CEO; ensure that all departments function productively and efficiently as a team. Maintain high morale and provide safe working conditions for all employees.
  • Participate in the hiring and selection process of team members; manage, develop, and coach supervised team professionals empowering them to elevate their levels of responsibility, span of control and performance; conduct performance development/evaluation processes with supervised staff; adhere to the documentation and policy standards of the organization for management tasks.
  • Recommend and implement management strategies and reporting procedures to ensure that s/he and the team have up-to-date situational awareness of all core issues and operating data pertinent to sound decision making.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and/or representative, when appropriate, at local, state, and national forums to support the mission, vision, and strategic goals of the organization; assist in identifying and learning about current trends, key topics, innovations, and speakers/consultants to support the organization; participate on local, state, and/or national boards, task forces and ad hoc committees to solidify and strengthen relationships.
  • Serve as part of the organization's executive team; provide governance and operational support to the Board of Directors.
  • Use software platforms and systems, including but not limited to Microsoft Office, Trello, Zoom, and Blackbaud suite of products to plan, execute, engage, and report on work progress and products.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as requested with an appropriate sense of humor, positive and professional attitude, and team spirit.
  • Serve as a positive, proactive voice for Homeless No More through social media, public speaking, public relations and/or representation at training and events; build capacity and knowledge of the organization.


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree required, master's degree preferred in business, finance, or strategy or equivalent professional experience in those specific areas.
  • Must have 5- 7 year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience; advanced knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Experience in managing individuals and teams, setting business goals, resource planning and managing overall employee performance; effective leadership techniques required to ensure high performance.
  • Maintain and build knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, leadership techniques, and coordination of people and resources.
  • Capable of quickly switching between environments and activities; able to act and react as necessary, even if limited information is available; not afraid to take charge of situation; can overcome resistance to leadership and take unpopular stands when necessary.
  • Be a critical thinker, well-organized, and detail-oriented; have proficient or expert communication (oral and written skills); demonstrated ability to be proactive and take initiatives; work both independently and in team setting; prioritize and manage multiple tasks; manage budgets and assist with writing grants and grant reports when needed.
  • Have good judgement, empathy, adaptability, and level-headed attitude; demonstrate proficient or expert interpersonal skills when interfacing with partners; be assertive and persuasive when necessary while maintaining positive and productive relationships.
  • Follow through with all projects and assignments and monitor attainment of objectives.
  • Manage light to moderate carrying and lifting of items.
  • Drive and travel throughout South Carolina and nationally as needed.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in all Microsoft Office Suite products, Raisers Edge and project management software such as Trello.
