Chief Advancement Officer

Position Description

The Chief Advancement Officer ("CAO") of the Pi Kappa Phi Foundation is responsible for leading and strengthening a comprehensive fundraising program in support of the Foundation’s mission and goals, with particular emphasis on major gifts and planned giving. The Chief Advancement Officer will create and foster a philanthropic culture among Pi Kappa Phi constituents and take a leadership position in developing and maintaining a productive relationship with all Pi Kappa Phi-related organizations.

This position supervises a development team focused on the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of charitable gifts to the Foundation.  Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer of Pi Kappa Phi and collaborating with the Chair, Executive Committee, and Trustees of the Foundation, the Chief Advancement Officer serves as a member of the Executive Leadership Team of Pi Kappa Phi. The position works autonomously and collaboratively in an energetic hybrid, remote & office environment.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising

  • Formulate short and long-term fundraising goals
  • Develop actionable strategies for meeting and exceeding those goals through fundraising activities
  • Build the Foundation’s donor pool through the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of leadership gifts and stewardship of donors
  • Plan, supervise and evaluate Foundation major gift and planned giving efforts
  • Manage a personal portfolio of 100-150 major gift prospects and donors
  • Make recommendations to the CEO & Board regarding the staffing level necessary to build a consistent and increasing major gift program
  • Establish and regularly update a list of fundable priorities for Pi Kappa Phi donors and prospects
  • Provide fundraising training, mentoring, and coaching to Foundation Board, staff, and volunteers
  • Use external presence and relationships to identify new prospective major gift donors

Operations

  • Supervise staff to ensure that administrative functions such as research, information systems, donor records, and other ancillary services are up-to-date and supportive of the development effort
  • Coordinate with the shared Communications Team to raise awareness of the Foundation and its primary goals through multichannel outreach efforts, publications, and digital media
  • Recruit, supervise and evaluate Foundation staff
  • Determine and monitor key metrics and benchmarks to assess the performance of development staff
  • Provide ongoing training and mentoring for staff
  • Facilitate interaction of the Chief Executive Officer, Board Chair, and Board members with significant prospects and donors
  • Participate In national events such as Supreme Chapter, Pi Kapp College, and various events organized by the National Fraternity and affiliated organizations
  • Serve as the official representative of Pi Kappa Phi and/or the Foundation when called upon
  • Develop professional relationships with philanthropic leadership at other IFC and Panhellenic organizations, providing an annual benchmarking report to the Foundation Board of their activities and results.

Governance

 In conjunction with the Chief Executive Officer:

  • Plan Board of Trustees meetings with Chair and prepare all necessary support material
  • Record, construct and maintain official records of minutes and governing documents
  • Assist the Nominating Committee with conducting research and making contacts for new or potential board members
  • Report grants and distribution activity summary to the Board of Trustees on a regular basis
  • Ensure timely payment and recording of approved grants, distributions, and scholarships
  • Review progress reports and requests for payment to ensure compliance with grant agreement and fund expenditure
  • Work with an external audit firm to develop and review annual financial statements and construct the IRS 990
  • Maintain compliance with applicable laws governing a 501c3 corporation

 IDEAL EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year accredited institution
  • Membership in Pi Kappa Phi
  • Seven or more years of experience in fundraising, higher education, or not-for-profit organizations, with proven success in major gift and planned gift solicitation
  • Demonstrated high-level strategic thinking and planning in a fund-raising organization
  • Track record of success in leading fundraising campaigns and programs
  • Success in establishing relationships with individuals and organizations of influence including funders, partner agencies, and volunteers
  • Ability to convey the organization’s strategic future, mission, and priorities to the Pi Kappa Phi community
  • Strong written and verbal communications skills; strong public speaking ability
  • Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy
  • Demonstrated ability to motivate, collaborate with, and drive strategic alignment among staff, Board, alumni members, and related organizations
  • Solid organizational abilities, including planning, delegating, program development, and task facilitation
  • Ability to engage and socialize with external constituents and prospective donors
  • Experience and skill in working with a Board of Trustees or Board of Directors

 PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS 

  • Master’s degree from an accredited institution in business administration, non-profit management, marketing/communication, public administration, or public policy
  • Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE) designation

 WORK ENVIRONMENT 

  • This position Is based in the Kelley A. Bergstrom Leadership Center of Pi Kappa Phi, in Charlotte, NC; the opportunity for remote employment will be evaluated on an individual basis.
  • Must be willing to work non-traditional work hours on occasion during fundraising events and to reach fundraising deadlines
  • Must be willing to travel extensively to meet with potential donors
  • Must be able to work cohesively and collaboratively with other affiliated organizations within Pi Kappa Phi
