As the chief fundraising officer for the University, the Vice President will provide a strategic vision and philanthropy plan that will enhance the advancement of the mission of the University. The Vice President reports directly to the President of the University. The start date is January 2, 2023.

The Opportunity

The Vice President for University Advancement is an outstanding opportunity for a successful, experienced fundraising professional to lead a great team committed to advancing the mission of the University through philanthropy. While demonstrating a deep appreciation for the mission and history of Winthrop University, the Vice President will successfully articulate that mission and generate excitement about the University among a diverse group of stakeholders. This administrator will understand and embrace the importance of having a meaningful role in the life of the University and its extended community.  

The Vice President is responsible for the operational, fiscal, and human resources within the division.  Reporting to the Winthrop University President, the Vice President for University Advancement is the key leader and influencer in determining the University’s overall strategies, goals, and plans that affect development, fundraising, and alumni relations. The Vice President maintains successful and effective relationships with the staff and board members of the Winthrop University Foundation, an $80M private 501(c)(3) corporation established to support Winthrop University.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Collaborates with the President, the Winthrop University Board of Trustees, and the Winthrop University Foundation Board to establish appropriate fundraising goals for the University; establishes and reviews policies, procedures, and guidelines associated with University Advancement programs and activities; develops and maintains divisional budgets.
  • Guides the University Advancement Division in strategic planning and management of programs, initiatives, relationship development, and fundraising campaigns to increase awareness and philanthropic support of Winthrop’s brand.
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and support to the Development staff in strategic planning for the creation and implementation of market strategies and collateral for the annual giving, major giving, and planned giving programs.  
  • Provides leadership and oversight to the Alumni Relations staff for the creation and implementation of alumni programs, activities, and outreach.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director of the Winthrop University Foundation to maintain a strong and mutually beneficial relationship between the Foundation and Winthrop to confirm activities and programs are consistent with shared goals.
  • Actively participates in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gift prospects locally, statewide, and nationally; establishes and maintains productive business relationships with the corporate business community.
  • Directly supervises the Associate Vice President for University Advancement and the Executive Director for Alumni Relations.

Qualifications

  • A master’s degree and at least 10 years of increasingly responsible, executive-level experience leading advancement and development, including fundraising and related operations, for a comprehensive master’s university  
  • Strong expertise in fundraising, including annual fund, planned giving, corporate and foundation relations, capital campaign, and alumni relations
  • Strong leadership abilities demonstrated by success in fundraising campaigns, strategies, techniques, and relationship management in related high-level positions in higher education
  • Proven record of working effectively across departments within an institution
  • Analytical workstyle that is data-informed and results-oriented
  • Knowledge of current fundraising methodology and regulations
  • Knowledge of budget preparation, monitoring, and administration
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and public speaking skills
