In These Times (ITT), a national print and online magazine dedicated to supporting movements for economic, racial, social and environmental justice, with a special emphasis on labor, is seeking an executive director to lead the organization forward into its fiftieth anniversary year in 2026 and beyond. This reshaped leadership post was created as a part of our larger commitment to producing progressive journalism that advances today’s movements for economic, racial, social and environmental justice. We are looking for a candidate with strong leadership qualities: 

  • Imagination to shape our organization’s direction, mission and strategic growth
  • Facility for building and managing a diverse, creative and respectful union workplace
  • Ability to develop and expand ITT’s universe of individual and foundation giving in order to ensure the organization’s growth and long-term financial stability
  • Capacity and connections for engaging and strengthening relationships with outside entities such as social movements, labor unions and ITT’s loyal readership and donors
  • Ingenuity to work with our editors to enhance our journalism’s impact 

The executive director will be a full-time, salaried employee who will report to ITT’s board of directors. Chicago, Illinois, is the preferred location for the job. For the right candidates, however, we are open to alternative working arrangements and, potentially, reshaping aspects of the position based on their strengths. The position will have a competitive salary, along with a generous benefits package.

About In These Times

The magazine is an important national voice, self-described as ​“Progressive without apology” and known especially for its award-winning investigative reporting. We have a full-time staff of 13 employees. Our print magazine regularly reaches nearly 40,000 subscribers, and our website generates anywhere from 3 to 6 million page views a year.
