Assistant Vice President, Planned Giving

Job Description Summary:
Reporting directly to the Vice President for University Advancement, the Assistant Vice President, Planned Giving occupies a critical fundraising role at the university as the principal driver of the strategy and execution of the university's planned giving program and gifting of non-cash assets. The incumbent partners with the President and Vice President of Advancement to secure planned gifts in the $1 million to $10 million+ range, leads the creation of a planning giving prospect pipeline, and is the expert for securing non-cash asset gifts. The incumbent is also an administrator, leading efforts in securing matured estate, trust, and life income gifts to the university and overseeing the Office of Planned Giving. The incumbent also serves as the public face of the planned giving program, presenting seminars, engaging professional advisors, attending events, conducting trainings, and partnering with on and off campus constituents both locally and nationally.

Specific Duties:
  • Partner with the President and the Vice President of Advancement in strategizing, cultivating, and soliciting high level prospects who have capacity to make $1 million to $10 million+ planned gifts, including outright and deferred gifts.



  • Lead the identification, cultivation, solicitation and securing of non-cash asset gifts, including real estate, securities, charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts, charitable lead trusts, retirement plans, and life insurance. Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward top planned giving prospects and manage a portfolio of planned giving prospects, legacy society members, and professional advisors. Be a subject matter expert on planned giving vehicles and gifting of non-cash assets.

  • Lead, design, and oversee the execution of a marketing strategy for identifying new planned giving prospects, including through website, print, and email communications. Follow up with prospects who respond to marketing pieces.

  • Oversee the Office of Planned Giving, which includes supervising all of its staff, planning and overseeing the office’s annual and multi-year budgets, preparing periodic planned giving reports for the Vice President of Advancement, leading the management and use of planned giving software and the production of gift calculations for prospects, and serving as the liaison for legacy society members.

  • Partner with the Chief Financial Officer and the Office of Financial and Business Services in overseeing, strategizing, and facilitating the administration of matured planned gifts, such as in trust or probate administration, in overseeing and facilitating administration of life income gifts, including charitable gift annuities and charitable trusts, and in maintaining life insurance policie gifted to the university. Serve as the lead liaison with donors and their professional advisors for administration of these gifts.

  • Advise, train, equip, and collaborate with University Advancement staff, especially the Major Gifts and Annual Giving teams, to solicit and secure blended and planned gifts.

  • Lead efforts to network with local professional advisors and host planned giving advisory council meetings. Enlist their help when necessary to secure planned gifts. Lead and oversee presentation efforts to the university, alumni, and the outside community on planned giving-related topics to generate new planned giving prospects.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Certification or comparable training in planned giving.
  • Five years of demonstrated success in securing cash and planned gifts of $1 million and higher or similar experience.
  • Five years of demonstrated success in working with prospects and donors through the life cycle of philanthropy in a higher education and/or non-profit setting or similar experience.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of planned giving vehicles. Familiarity with IRS code and regulations regarding planned and non-cash asset gifts.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Certification in planned giving and/or law degree.
  • Overseeing marketing and management of a higher education planned giving program or equivalent.
  • Supervisory experience (2 years).
