THE OPPORTUNITY:  The Controller directs the operations of the Accounting Department and is responsible for and oversees not-for-profit accounting and gift processing functions. The Controller is responsible for the timely production of periodic financial reports and the maintenance of a system of accounting records, processes, and internal controls that enhance the accuracy of reported financial results, mitigate risk, measure success, and ensure compliance with generally accepted accounting principles. The Controller supports the VP, Finance, and Chief Financial Officer to ensure processes and procedures incorporate industry best practices and efficient use of the organization's resources. The position will be responsible for the supervision of accounting staff and oversight of all financial services.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Oversee all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain internal control and safeguards for receipt of revenue, costs, and program budgets, and actual expenditures.
  • Consistently analyze financial data and present financial reports accurately and promptly; clearly communicate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements; monitor progress and changes; and keep senior leadership abreast of financial status and issues.
  • Oversee the operations of the accounting department, including ensuring the department structure effectively achieves the goals and objectives of a dynamic and rapidly growing organization.
  • Coordinate and oversee monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processes from account reconciliation and review through report analysis and dissemination.
  • Manage the annual audit and timely preparation of the Form 990 tax return. Oversee the research and resolution of technical accounting and tax matters.
  • Ensure the organization complies with all federal, state, and local regulations pertaining to internet usage, state registration, sales and use tax obligations, lobbying, gaming activities, contests, and any other business requiring compliance or reporting.
  • Oversee all financial, project/program, and grants accounting; ensure that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; collate financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Manage and track the performance of invested assets in keeping with policies and investment guidelines; partner with external portfolio managers for liquidity needs.
  • Post payroll to the general ledger twice monthly. Follow up with HR on any issues/concerns.

QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:  

  • A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience
  • Minimum of a BA in Accounting or related field; CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • Thorough knowledge of US GAAP and FASB Standards
  • Nonprofit experience required.
  • Experience formalizing, implementing, and documenting standard processes and controls, preferably in a Public Accounting or Internal Audit environment.
  • Experience coordinating audit activities and managing financial statement reporting, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments.
  • A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate, and foundation grants is preferred.
  • Commitment to recruiting, mentoring, training, and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly
  • Strong financial acumen and analytical skills with an ability to synthesize financials and summarize results across various levels of the organization
  • Strong written, oral, interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills with the ability to communicate complex ideas in ways that are accessible and understandable.  Must be effective in cross-departmental, one-on-one, small, and large group settings, with varying levels of staff and executive leadership.
  • Financial systems experience with the Vena planning tool and Blackbaud Financial Edge is a plus.
  • High energy, self-starter who drives action and results, regardless of challenges, changes, or setbacks
  • A collaborative approach, flexible and high degree of emotional intelligence
