Built on the legacy of Ernest “Ernie” Wentcher and his vision for empowering high-character individuals, the Wentcher Foundation supports its scholars through college and prepares them for success following graduation. Wentcher Scholars exemplify academic excellence, high character, a commitment to service and demonstrate financial need. They are graduating Chicago Public Schools (“CPS”)  seniors and incoming Oakton Community College students.  They receive a scholarship award of up to $10,000 a year, renewable for four years as well as guidance and resources for social, emotional and academic support.  Since the Foundation was established 25 years ago, the lives of more than 1000 Wentcher Scholars have been changed.

The Foundation is intentional about increasing educational equity for high character, low income and high-achieving students from selective enrollment, charter, vocational, career academy, military and neighborhood public high schools. Scholars attend universities and colleges throughout the country, as well as study abroad.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the executive management of the organization, overseeing all components that support program delivery and overall organizational well-being. The Executive Director participates in the strategic planning process including bringing the recommendations of the staff to the Board for consideration and leading the implementation of Strategic Plan initiatives. The person will stay abreast of best practices among scholarship providers. The Executive Director manages the budget of approximately $3.5M and 5 staff. The Executive Director has ultimate responsibility for external relationships with schools, both CPS and Oakton Community College, as well as building alliances with strategic partners to ensure efficient use of Foundation funds and increased impact.

Demonstrated success building strategic partnerships is key.  The person we seek will be an innovative marketer who will continue to grow visibility for the Foundation to become a strong public presence.  Experience in a senior leadership role reporting directly to or working closely with a Board of Directors is needed. 

Qualified candidates will have a background in nonprofit management with minimum of ten years senior level management experience.  Experience programming for college persistence and completion to career, scholarship selection and awarding is desired. An undergraduate degree from a four-year college or university, is required, graduate degree preferred.

Salary & Benefits

$150,000 - $175,000 plus benefits including a 403(b) retirement plan, healthcare allowance, hybrid work schedule and paid time off.
