Job Description:

Amherst College invites applications for the Director of Strategic Alumni Engagement position. The Director of Strategic Alumni Engagement is a full-time, year-round position, starting at $84,000 - commensurate with experience. Given Amherst's distinction as one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country, the successful candidate will demonstrate the ways in which they bring value to and will work towards supporting a broadly diverse community.

Reporting to the Senior Director of Alumni and Constituent Engagement, The Director of Strategic Alumni Engagement oversees all strategy and programming for the class-based, affinity-based, and virtual-based engagement modalities. The director oversees the class-engagement model including strategy and planning of all non-reunion based engagement. A thought-leader and natural convener, this role works with the Director of Regional and Parent Programs to create a dynamic and engaging alumni experience that is consistent regardless of reunion year and/or regional location. Working with the Director of Classes and On-campus programs, the director manages all communication and liaison activities for a designated cohort in the alumni reunion cycle programming schedule. Additionally, the director oversees planning, strategy, and implementation of all current and future affinity and virtual-based engagement intended for a highly diverse alumni body. The director plays a critical role in building successful partnerships with diverse staff across Advancement. The director supervises a team of four individuals and fosters inclusion, professional development and growth among staff. This role is responsible for cultivating a diverse workforce and participates in the College's efforts to create a respectful, inclusive, and welcoming work environment.

Summary of Responsibilities

Class-based Engagement Strategy and Programming
  • Oversee all class-based engagement strategies with an emphasis on connecting class cohorts and engaging our diverse alumni community
    • Manage volunteer/class officer relationships with the College
    • Manage the class notes solicitation process for each class four times per year
    • Recruit and manage volunteer staffing for a designated cohort of classes
    • Manage, audit, and reconcile the class financials for reunion cycle programming for a designated cohort of classes
    • Help create and contribute to an inclusive and equitable culture for all volunteers
  • Develop a series of non-reunion related programming for each cohort aimed at engaging a highly diverse group of alumni
  • Collaborate and coordinate with colleagues across Advancement (and the College) to ensure smooth and full communication around events, initiatives, and individuals
  • Other projects as assigned by Senior Director


Affinity-based Engagement
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of an affinity-based engagement strategy that works within the current alumni leadership structureand increases the diversity of alumni engagement
  • Build and manage all affinity-based groups with accompanying programs
  • Manage relationships with campus partners and secure resources for programs
  • Recruit and manage volunteer staffing
  • Direct digital and print communications strategies, in collaboration with Advancement Communications


Virtual-Engagement Strategy and Programming
  • Oversee the creation and implementation of a Amherst Alumni virtual experience - a digital content portal that engages the Amherst alumni community
  • Provide strategy and leadership on creating an Alumni+ platform to engage the diverse alumni community regardless of geographic location


Management of Strategic Alumni Engagement Staff, Resources, and Partnerships
  • Oversee a team of four full-time staff members
  • Assess programming annually for both qualitative and quantitative value. Build a culture of data-driven storytelling that connects ACE to college mission and strategic plan
  • Guide and support professional development and growth of the team all while working towards an inclusive, equitable culture
  • Oversee the budget for Strategic Alumni Engagement
  • Serve as Alumni & Constituent Engagement principal liaison for the following campus partners: The Loeb Career Center and Campus IT


Qualifications

Required:
  • Bachelor's degree (Master's Degree Preferred)
  • 7 - 9 years of related experience including event planning and volunteer management in higher education and/or non-profit environment
  • Demonstrated management, leadership, diplomacy, and staff supervisory skills
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
  • Exceptional customer service, motivational, organizational, and time management skills
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and produce data-driven narratives
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently and collaboratively
  • Ability and willingness to work with new and cutting-edge technologies
  • Ability to and enthusiasm for working with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Attention to detail
  • Initiative and imagination for innovation
  • Occasional weekend and evening hours required to staff on-campus events
  • Occasional travel for volunteer management/recruitment, regional programs support, and professional development


Preferred:
  • Facility using data and complex reporting to inform programming decision
