POSITION SUMMARY

The Repertory Theatre of St. Louis seeks a Major Gifts Officer to build a strong base of individual donors to support the ambitious and strategic growth of the theatre. The MGO will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding individual prospects with an estimated capacity of supporting the theatre with an annual gift of $10,000 or more. Key to success in this role will be identifying and building relationships with new prospects, as well as strengthening relationships with existing donors to maximize philanthropic support. In addition to soliciting annual major gifts, the MGO will explore ways in which donors can support the mission and priorities of the theatre.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Manage an active portfolio of 75-100 major gift prospects
  • Identify and qualify new major gift prospects and create a comprehensive strategy for donor cultivation, solicitation, and retention based on the donor’s giving history and capacity
  • Directly solicit major gifts and partner with senior staff and/or volunteers on solicitations by providing prospect briefings, strategic guidance, and assistance with donor communications
  • Develop, plan, and participate in strategic donor engagement opportunities, such as small events for select prospects in the portfolio and larger donor stewardship events
  • Develop a high-quality donor experience through regular correspondence, professional proposals, and timely acknowledgements
  • Track prospect activity by maintaining regular reports that accurately reflect progress toward building relationships and increasing donor support
  • Staff and support the Artistic Director and Managing Director with their donor portfolios
  • Represent The Rep at external functions and events
 

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE AND QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Three to five years’ experience managing donor relationships with proven track record of successfully closing five- and six-figure gifts
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills and a proven ability to create and foster excellent relationships between donors and an organization
  • Comfort in asking individuals to commit their money, time, and/or talents to support the mission of an organization
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully in-person, on the phone, and via email/text with donors, board members, volunteers, and colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced environment, meet concurrent deadlines, organize time and priorities, and to do so in collaboration with diverse stakeholders
  • High degree of integrity, initiative, and resourcefulness
  • Appreciation for and demonstrated commitment to the Rep’s mission and values
  • An entrepreneurial spirit and proclivity for building new systems and processes
  • Proficiency with office technology and donor information systems
  • Passion for the mission and work of with a strong commitment to its core values
  • Ability to travel 25% of the time
