The Development and Outreach Department of Human Rights Watch (HRW) is seeking applicants for the position of Director to focus on major and leadership gifts fundraising in Santa Barbara and central California. This full-time, work from home position, will be based in central California and will report to the Managing Director, Development and Outreach Department.

Due to COVID-19, many of our global offices are operating in reduced capacities. We recognize that this moment, during the pandemic, is a uniquely difficult time for most people, particularly those with caregiving responsibilities, and we aim to be as flexible and supportive as possible in both the recruitment for and onboarding of this position.

Responsibilities: 

1. Build financial support for the organization by designing and managing a California based development and outreach strategy; Work with the Managing Director to build philanthropic networks and support throughout central California;

2. Collaborate closely with the volunteer Santa Barbara Committee to expand support for the organization by researching, identifying, cultivating, and soliciting philanthropic commitments from current supporters and prospective donors, including individuals, foundations, and corporations, with a focus on major and leadership donors;

3. Manage the Santa Barbara Committee, directing the group’s efforts in line with fundraising, outreach, and cultivation initiatives; develop a diverse, equitable and inclusive committee and keep the members engaged through regular meetings and communication.

4. Present the work of HRW to existing and prospective supporters;

5. In collaboration with the volunteer Santa Barbara Committee, help to build and expand the Santa Barbara human rights community by managing the production of fundraising, outreach, and cultivation events;

6. Oversee gift processing and donor support services for Santa Barbara with the Los Angeles Coordinator and Manager; create and regularly monitor the Santa Barbara budget;

7. Deliver output in a timely manner and be consistent with the agreed strategy and priorities of the Development and Outreach department; and

 8. Perform other responsibilities as may be required.

Managerial Responsibilities: 

1. Model inclusive behavior and consistently adhere to HRW’s internal values;

2. Incorporate diversity, equity, and inclusion values and initiatives into the division’s work; and

3. Work with staff to develop initiatives aimed at movement-building and expanding our partnership with diverse clients/donors/stakeholders and partners.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:  A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience is required. An advanced degree is desirable.

Experience: A minimum of seven years of fundraising experience with major and leadership donors and management experience is required.

Related Skills and Knowledge:

1. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English is required; proficiency in Spanish is desired.

2. Demonstrated commitment to human rights and/or international issues and the capacity to master and represent the mission and programs of HRW is required.

3. Familiarity with the Santa Barbara philanthropic community is desirable.

4. Ability to multi-task effectively, including having good planning and organizing skills and ability to work well under pressure are required.

5. Creativity, initiative, follow-through, and excellent organizational skills are required.

6. Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively within HRW as well as with committee members and external partners are required. Track record of effective team-work is required..

7. Experience working within international contexts is highly desirable.

8. Strong technology skills, including experience with donor databases (preferably Salesforce) are highly desirable.
